The Robin Padilla – Maria Ozawa starrer “Nilalang” will no longer make it to the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) after its lead actor left the movie.
MTF Group, the co-producer of Haunted Tower Pictures that is making the movie, confirmed that it will no longer finance “Nilalang.”
“We do not believe that there is a suitable replacement for Padilla. As a result, the prospective timeline for the production of the movie will be compromised,” the company said in its official statement.
“Given the proposed working budget for the film, the non-participation of Padilla means that the project has no bankable actor as its lead and the absence of an immediate alternative means that the production will be delayed to an extent that ‘Nilalang’ will not be released in time for the film festival,” it added.
“Nilalang” was cancelled after the actor withdrew from the film to be with his wife Mariel Rodriguez who recently lost their triplets last August 14, 2015. This was relayed by Padilla’s manager Betchay Vidanes to showbiz columnist Nora Calderon. She said that the actor’s decision is due to Mariel’s delicate pregnancy.
“On behalf of the couple, we would like to ask for your prayers and utmost consideration for the couple’s privacy and comfort. May the Creator bless them with hope, mercy, and joy,” Vidanes said.
Dismayed
Ozawa, however. didn’t take things lightly. The Japanese actress was disappointed with Padilla whom she called “unprofessional” since he quit 10 days before the shooting date.
“It’s not that I really wanted to film with Robin. I feel so sorry for the film, the directors, and staff,” she posted on Instagram.
Is the con on?
An ABS-CBN report said “Con Man” starring John Lloyd Cruz might replace “Nilalang.” The “One More Chance” actor earlier regretted that his movie wasn’t a part of the MMFF.
“We are saddened by the news and regret not being part of the MMFF because we believe there is a clamor for this kind of movie. We are not part of the judging committee, so there’s nothing we can do about it. We hope they didn’t make the wrong decision,” Cruz said.
The Metro Manila Development Authority, which organizes the MMFF, has yet to announce the withdrawal of “Nilalang” from the festival.
