The Philippine TV had already showed several remakes of both international and local series up to this date. And viewers continouosly love the revamping and restoring of these once iconic characters into the modern stars today.
Let’s backtrack and test how many of these series can you still remember:
Marimar
The original series of “Marimar” first aired in Mexico where Thalía and Eduardo Capetillo starred as the main protagonists. With its massive clout and popularity in Mexico and in Latin countries, Thalia became a household name in the industry. She even visited some parts of the world, including the Philippines which even up to this day, we can still recall the scenes that Thalia portrayed as Marimar and made us all “The Millenials” sang that catchy Latin Beat she once popularized.
In 2007, GMA Network adapted the series and trusted sexy actress Marian Rivera and her now husband Dingdong Dantes to import the fire here in the country. And the show was a massive success.
Due to high demands, GMA once again brought back “Marimar” on screen, this time with Miss World 2013 Megan Young. They did another remake last 2015 and paired the beauty queen with ex-“Pinoy Big Brother” housemate Tom Rodriguez.
My Girl
One of the classic Korean series that was loved by Filipinos is “My Girl” in 2005. Lee Da-Hae played the cheerful and lovely role of Joo Yoo-rin.
In 2008, ABS-CBN remade the hit series and put the chemistry of former lovers and “Pinoy Big Brother” housemates Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson.
Ako Si Kim Sam Soon (My Lovely Sam Soon)
Another Korean series, “My Lovely Sam Soon,” that follows a story of a chubby girl who found love.
The romantic comedy hit found its way to the Philippines and was remade by GMA Network, starring veteran singer/actress Regine Velasquez.
La Lola
This Argentine TV comedy was sought for its unique and funny plot. It arrived in the country and was remade by then Kapuso star JC de Vera and Rhian Ramos.
I Love Betty La Fea
Starring the iconic tandem of John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo, “I Love Betty La Fea” remake became an instant hit in the Philippines. It’s a story of an ugly girl that eventually captured the heart of a handsome rich man.
This is adapted from the Columbian TV series “Yo soy Betty, la fea.”
Rosalinda
This Mexican telenovela first gained attention in 1999. The romantic story of the protagonists caught the hearts of the Filipinos that’s why they demanded a version of it.
In 2009, GMA Network partnered Carla Abellana and ex-boyfriend Gueff Eigenmann to recreate the series.
All About Eve
A South Korean TV drama that showed female rivalry was soon demanded in the Philippines.
Then Kapuso star Iza Calzado and “Ika-6 Na Utos” actress Sunshine Dizon played the roles of enemies.
Only You
A Korean drama series shot in the heart of Italy, “Only You,” is among the hit remakes of ABS-CBN. It starred Sam Milby and Angel Locsin along with other great actors Diether Ocampo and Iya Villania back in 2009.
Stairway to Heaven
A wonderful story of love and friendship, “Stairway to Heaven,” was both loved in its Korean (2003) and Filipino form.
In 2009, the Korean drama series was remade in the country via GMA Network, starring Dingdong Dantes and Rhian Ramos.
Lovers in Paris
Another hit Korean romantic series, “Lovers in Paris,” earned praises from Filipinos. It called for a remake in 2004 and starred ex-lovers KC Concepcion and Piolo Pascual.
Full House
An audience-favorite Korean series “Full House,” was adapted in the Philippines due to insistent demand and its exciting story. In 2010, Kapuso stars Heart Evangelista and now Kapamilya Richard Gutierrez reprised the roles of Rain and Song Hye-kyo.
Endless Love
In 2000, the heartbreaking story of Korean drama “Endless Love,” made an impact in Filipinos. Kapuso love team and real life husband and wife Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera did the remake in 2010.
Green Rose
Romance and revenge in one series. The South Korean drama had its remake in the Philippines via ABS-CBN stars Anne Curtis and Jericho Rosales in 2011.
Maria la del Barrio
Like, “Rosalinda,” this Mexican telenovela found its place in Filipino hearts. In 2012, ABS-CBN remade “Maria la del Barrio” through the gorgeous Erich Gonzales.
Coffee Prince
Who would forget the starting days of Gong Yoo? One of his famous portrayals was in “Coffee Prince.”
In 2012, Kapuso star Kris Bernal took on the challenging role with Aljur Abrenica.
Temptation of Wife
The fiery series about mistresses and husbands in South Korea took the attention of viewers like storm. “Temptation of Wife” was adapted in the country last 2012, headlined by ‘Primetime Queen’ Marian Rivera.
Maria Mercedes
The 1992 Mexican telenovela starring the famous Thalia got its remake in the Philippines via ABS-CBN and through sexy actress Jessy Mendiola.
How about the locals?
Encantadia
In 2005, GMA Network produced a one-of-a-kind fantasy series depicting the magical world of Sang’gres. It starred Sunshine Dizon, Karylle Yuzon, Iza Calzado, and Diana Zubiri.
Because of its unforgettable plot, GMA brought it back in 2016. The reboot starred today’s female Kapuso stars Glaiza de Castro, Kylie Padilla, Gabbi Garcia, and Sanya Lopez.
Impostora
The original female rivalry series “Impostora,” first aired in 2007 starring Sunshine Dizon and Iza Calzado.
This year, Kris Bernal inherited the lead role and took on its challenges in GMA Telebabad.
