If GMA Network had the first-ever hit TV series this year titled “My Husband’s Lover,” then this particular weekly series produced by TV5 titled “Positive” is one that can be considered monumental in its attempt as well as the deep issue it wants to tackle.

Having Martin Escudero as the lead star of this show is already a good sign since the young actor has natural way of interpreting his character as Carlo Santillan, a call center operations manager who has developed full-blown AIDS.

Carlo lived a very hedonistic lifestyle since high school. He freely consumed drugs and alcohol, had numerous sexual partners at the age of 15. After leaving the rehabilitation, he found work as a call center agent. He rose from the ranks until he earned and was promoted to operations manager post.

Despite the success in his career, he started developing recurrent pneumonia symptoms, and at the urging of his doctor, had his blood screened for possible HIV infection and eventually the test results showed that he is HIV-positive. The show is  his journey to retracing his past in order to determine who was the person that might have possibly infected him with the said virus.

Eric Quizon who directs this show with social issue is successful enough in making the actors under his helm act effectively in their respective characters.

In its first episode titled ‘Franz’, which Gio Alvarez was the center of the story; as he was the first person whom Carlo suspected of contracting AIDS.

Though AIDS may have been identified with the homosexuals, the series that Benedict Mique has developed is not treated as entirely the usual gay-themed story that highlights mainly on love, sexcapades, and misadventures, but something that really explores about the struggles of people with AIDS and what kind of life they have after they get sick with the such.

As a new series—‘Positive’ shows positive signs of really making an issue that is relevant to our times, but seldom discussed due to ignorance and fear—to making people more aware and learn to accept these people with HIV/AIDS; by treating them as individuals who need more understanding, love, and support.
