Former US secretary of state Madeleine Albright dazzled the crowd of business leaders, diplomats, and government officials who came to listen to her insights on global issues and international affairs in the “Forum on Global Governance and the World Economy: An ANC Leadership Series,” moderated by award-winning journalist Karen Davila last July 19 at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Grand Ballroom.
Dr. Albright, considered as one of the most influential women in history, spoke before more than 400 guests that included Department of Foreign Affairs secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, US ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim, Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella, and Rep. Pia Cayetano, as well as ABS-CBN executives led by network president and CEO Carlo Katigbak and ABS-CBN News head and ANC managing director Ging Reyes.
The current Chair of Albright Stonebridge Group and Chair of Albright Capital Management began her talk with a recollection of her family’s roots and the beginning of her career as a diplomat, up to becoming the highest-ranking woman in the history of the U.S. government.
She then proceeded to discuss some of the pressing issues in the world today, such as the on-going armed conflicts around the globe, and emphasized the importance of cooperation among countries in resolving issues. To summarize her speech she simply said, “the world is a mess.”
Dr. Albright, currently a professor in the Practice of Diplomacy at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and chair of the National Democratic Institute, also gamely answered questions from Davila and audience members, who sought for her stand on national issues such as the current war in Marawi. The speaker maintained she would not comment on domestic policies but reiterated the importance of finding the roots of conflict.
Famous for making statements using the pins she wear, she said she would wear a pin with an active man and a loudspeaker if she would meet the Philippine president.
This is the second time that ANC featured a world-renowned speaker at the ANC Leadership Series. Last year, ANC brought in Virgin Group founder and philanthropist Sir Richard Branson, who shared his life story and business knowledge to a crowd of business leaders, celebrities, and professionals in the forum moderated by Cathy Yang.
