PEP.ph recently released a special report on sharing how ABS-CBN Corporation and GMA Network produce their television series. The said report also shows why a television show gets extended for years while others get the boot only after a few weeks.
In the said report, viewers’ feedback correlates with why a series gets an extension. ABS-CBN Corporation uses metrics to assess the performance of a show. In GMA Network, ratings remain as the determining factor on the pace and duration of the program.
ABS-CBN Corporation: Five factors of viewers’ feedback to determine the pace of the story.
ABS-CBN also has five factors to consider: 1) ratings, 2) advertising load, 3) social media engagement 4) popularity on TFC and 5) views on iWanTv.
According to the special report in PEP.ph, “producers look at ratings as well as reactions from Focused Group Discussions and social media comments that are collated by ABS-CBN’s research team.” The said report also states that “business unit heads and creative teams then discuss if reactions are valid to adjust storytelling.”
GMA Network: Ratings on the show’s first six weeks determine the pacing of the story.
Meanwhile, GMA Network has a six-week policy. If a series doesn’t rate well in its first six weeks, the network will give another week. If the series still has yet to rate high, the network would dispatch the said series.
According to PEP.ph’s special report, “if a show struggles in the ratings, the creative team removes certain plot points and speed up the storytelling.” However, “if ratings won’t improve the show’s run will be shortened.”
How and why ABS-CBN Corporation and GMA Network extends its shows?
In ABS-CBN Corporation, a series also receives an extension with the management discussing the possibility of one. Unit heads and creative teams also remain present to determine how long they can stretch the story.
For example, FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano remains as one of the most watched Kapamilya television series. This show has also been on air for almost three years. The five factors of viewers’ feedback remain positive. This leads to a discussion between management, unit heads and the creative teams on how long they can stretch Cardo Dalisay’s story.
Meanwhile, GMA Network has already informed their creative teams on any possible extensions. This determines how long they can extend the storytelling.
For example, The Cure has already been determined to have a short run as director Mark Reyes himself declared not to make it long. However, the show that The Cure replaced, Sherlock Jr. only had a short run as it became a victim of low ratings against FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano. Although the show Sherlock Jr. replaced, Super Ma’am had a lengthy run, it still ended quicker than the said Kapamilya crime-drama series.
