  • Ding, Ang Bato had a full house for its gala night.
  • Each and every part of the production left the audience in awe.
  • The production also had a heavy collaboration with the deaf performers of the School of Deaf and Applied Sciences.

The Benilde Arts and Culture Cluster recently produced a dance musical based on Mars Ravelo’s Darna, “Ding, Ang Bato!” The production had a full house crowd of VIPs, theater aficionados and media at the gala night held in May 15, Tuesday at the SDA Theater.

Many scenes from Ding, Ang Bato! received cheers and applause from the audience. Each and every part of the production left the audience in awe. The production also had a heavy collaboration with the deaf performers of the School of Deaf and Applied Sciences.

Tuxq Rutaquio and Joee Mejias’ production design satisfied the audience’s eyes at first glance. Joaquin Jose Aranda’s lighting design made the viewers keep their eyes open. Sig Pecho’s shadow play awaken audience’s emotions. Ejay Yatco, Jef Flores and Aji Manalo’s music and sound designed remained a powerful material for the production which deserved a hefty applause.

Carlos Serrano III as Ding and Lea Roque as Tina made the audience feel for them whether they get pushed down or raised up. The audience loved Herc Ang’s portrayal as Arman who made them laugh out loud. Stacy Abarca as Narda, Paula Paguio as Lola Isabel and Natasha Cabrera as Valentina performed solos which met a loud applause. The crowd cheered as Christine Crame was introduced as Darna.

Mars Ravelo’s family also attended the said gala night. Rex Ravelo applauded the young team. He also noted that the super-heroine became the product of his father’s creative mind at their age. Ding, Ang Bato! became a modern and somewhat political re-telling of Mars’ Darna lore in the eyes of Narda’s deaf brother, Ding. With the lead character portraying a deaf role, Denisa Reyes and Ernest Mandap incorporated sign language in the choreography.
