Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly.
Madama Butterfly has been referenced a lot in the play, M Butterfly. Giacomo Puccini‘s play was about an American Naval officer, John Pinkerton who purchased a house for himself and his fiancé Butterfly. Pinkerton, however, left Butterfly who gave birth to their son.
When he came back to Japan, Pinkerton already has a new wife, Kate, who agreed to raise Butterfly’s child as her own. Devastated at losing both Pinkerton and her son, Butterfly cuts her own throat. When Pinkerton rushed into the room, she had already died.
Olivier’s character as Rene Gallimard mentioned this play often. He even had a step-by-step process in capturing his Butterfly.
