Night Shyamalan, the director of ‘Sixth Sense,’ ‘Signs,’ and ‘The Visit,’ returns to the big screen as he gives us one of the year’s most anticipated movies – “Glass”. The film serves as a sequel to his other films, ‘Unbreakable’ (2000) and ‘Split’ (2016). It stars Bruce Willis, James McAvoy, Samuel Jackson, Anya Taylor Joy, and Sarah Paulson. ‘Glass’ breaks into Philippine cinemas this January 16, 2018 from Buena Vista International Philippines .
We counted down the 10 reasons why superhero thriller “Glass” is a must-watch!
10. The M. Night Shyamalan Universe Collide
It all started with 2000’s psychological thriller ‘Unbreakable’ which starred Bruce Willis as a man who realizes that he was born to become a superhero after he became the only survivor of a deadly train crash. Years after the release of the film, Shymalan surprised us with the unexpected sequel, the horror thriller ‘Split’ which introduced a new supervillain played by James McAvoy. This year, the two worlds of ‘Unbreakable’ and ‘Split’ collide in ‘Glass’.
9. A Superhero Story Grounded in Reality
In ‘Unbreakable’, M. Night Shyamalan wanted to introduce a superhero story in a real-life setting. So unlike most of the superhero movies that we are seeing today, it is more grounded in reality. He continues this theme in the much anticipated sequel ‘Glass,’ the third and final film in the trilogy.
8. The Perfect Conclusion to the Trilogy
Night Shyamalan’s series of films, starting with ‘Unbreakable’ and followed by ‘Split,’ forms the so-called Eastrail 177 Trilogy. It was named after the train that Bruce Willis’ character took, which paved way for him to discover his powers.
After watching ‘Glass,’ I can definitely say that it is the perfect conclusion to the decade long trilogy. It merged the universes of the two previous films seamlessly. It also masterfully closed all the chapters of the trilogy and tied up every loose end.
7. Night Shyamalan’s Trademark Twist
Of course, an M. Night Shyamalan film won’t be complete without his trademark twists. There’s a lot of big revelations in the film that will surely surprise audiences. There’s also a big reveal about one’s character’s past and how he is connected with the other characters, seamlessly merging their universes.
6. A Deleted Scene From ‘Unbreakable’
Yes! A deleted scene that was not included in the final cut of the 2000 film ‘Unbreakable’ will be part of the movie ‘Glass.’ And being a fan of the first movie, I was so delighted to watch this scene featuring Bruce Willis from 18 years ago!
5. The Returning Cast
‘Glass’ features returning cast members Spencer Treat Clark as Joseph Dunn, son of Bruce Willis’ character from ‘Unbreakable’ eighteen year ago. He is known for his roles in films like ‘The Last Exorcism Part II’ (2013) and ‘The Town That Dreaded Sundown’ (2014), and television series like ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ and ‘Animal Kingdom.’ Charlayne Woodard also returns as Mrs. Price, mother of Samuel L. Jackson’s character.
Anya Taylor-Joy reprises her role as Casey Cooke from ‘Split.’ She is known for her films ‘The Witch’ (2015), ‘Morgan’ (2016), ‘Marrowbone’ (2017), and ‘Thoroughbreds’.
4. Sarah Paulson
They are joined by Golden Globe Award winner Sarah Paulson who plays Dr. Ellie Staple, a psychiatrist specializing in delusions of grandeur. She is known for her roles in the television series ‘American Horror Story’ and the recent Netflix hit ‘Bird Box’.
3. James McAvoy
James McAvoy returns as Kevin, the man with 23 different personalities whose body chemistry changes with each persona, resulting to the 24th personality known as ‘The Beast.’ He first appeared in the horror thriller ‘Split’ and he is set to have an epic showdown with Bruce Willis’ character in ‘Glass’.
2. Bruce Willis
From ‘Unbreakable,’ Bruce Willis returns as David Dunn, a security guard who possesses invulnerability, superhuman strength and an extrasensory ability to see the crimes committed by others just by touching them. In ‘Glass’, he is now known as the vigilante named ‘The Overseer’.
1. Samuel L. Jackson
Samuel L. Jackson reprises his role as ‘Unbreakable’s Elijah Price, known also by his pseudonym Mr. Glass. His character emerges as an orchestrator for David Dunn and Kevin to come face to face with one another in an epic showdown that may cost their lives. He also holds a secret critical to both men.
