  • ABS-CBN holding public auditions for the Iconic Filipina hero, ‘Darna’
  • Director Jerrold Tarog, the new director for ‘Darna’ after Erik Matti

Following the news of Actress Liza Soberano’s exit from ‘Darna’, Star Cinema, media giant ABS-CBN’s movie production arm, together with Star Hunt has called for a nationwide search for the one of the most coveted roles in Philippine Entertainment: The Next Darna Actress.

This search is made possible by the combined efforts of Star Cinema Managing Director Olivia Lamasan and Star Hunt’s, Laurenti Dyogi. According to Director Olive, “We have several auditions from our very own artists from Star Magic, even past contestants of beauty pageants. There are athletes, in fact.

Direk Jerrold Tarog (The new director in charge for Darna), has shortlisted names, but we would want to keep the field open.”

“For all we know, there are still undiscovered talents out in the open, and of course we wouldn’t want to leave any stones unturned’, Lamasan added.

But, what qualifications do aspirants possess to call themselves worthy of portraying Darna? “Personally, we would want to keep our minds open. Sometimes, when auditioning, their physical figures don’t make the cut, but the way they project themselves in speaking and in acting, there is something in their rawness,’ Director Olive said.

Star Hunt auditions, on the other hand, does not guarantee a spot for the new Darna. “The Star Hunt auditions is not a promise. It is not a commitment to cast a new Darna. It is only an opportunity for our empowered Filipino Women to audition and present themselves as the right person for the role of Darna’, Director Dyogi answered.

The open auditions will take place on May 4 and May 5, 10am, at ABS CBN audience entrance. The announcement was made over several of ABS-CBN’s social media accounts. Schedules for the next ‘Darna’ hunt will be out for the coming weeks.

What are you waiting for? This might be your chance to be the next Iconic Filipina superhero, ‘DARNA!’

The selection for the next ‘Darna’ – has been long and arduous. Angel Locsin, who once played Darna on television, said in 2017 that she would no longer reprise the iconic role.

Liza Soberano, was then tapped for the role, but the actress withdrew from the high-profile project due to an injury that widely limited the stunts she could do, as required of the role.

Erik Matti, acclaimed film maker, was supposed to direct the long-awaited new ‘Darna’ movie but he has since backed out of the project. Jerrold Tarog has since taken over. Matti’s admiration to Nadine Lustre as the actress fit to portray the role of ‘Darna,’ did not make much of an impact to the industry. Excitement over the upcoming movie has been palpable, with fans offering their bets on who should don the iconic ‘Darna’ mantle next.

‘Darna’ is a Filipino superhero created by comics writer, Mars Ravelo.
