Lea Salonga fires up social media with her bold statements

Kapamilya Broadway star Lea Salonga didn’t mince her words in venting out her frustrations with what’s currently happening in the country.

In her Facebook post, Lea said, “Dear Pilipinas, p***** ina, ang hirap mong mahalin.” (Dear Philippines, f**k, you’re hard to love.)

Aside from that, Lea also made a comment saying criticisms of the government shouldn’t be taken as one’s “hatred” of the country and its leaders.

“Criticism of one’s government shouldn’t be considered an expression of hatred, but one of love and a desire to see the country succeed. I would like to think that in a functioning democracy, this should never be anyone’s fear, that their criticism would land them in jail, or worse, a corpse lying on a curb.”

Lea also posted about rape victim-blaming which has again caught attention after the viral exchange between Frankie Pangilinan and Ben Tulfo.

In the post, she shared an article about an exhibit of the clothes women wore when they were raped.

The exhibit aimed to highlight that rape and sexual assault doesn’t happen because of what a person wears but because rapists exist.

“There is no dress code for rape. Stop blaming victims for crimes done against them. Sole responsibility should be on the rapist. Full stop,” she said.

Meanwhile, with her bold statements, Lea got the support and admiration of the netizens.

The phrase I STAND WITH LEA SALONGA trended on Twitter making it the number 1 topic on Twitter Philippines Tuesday, June 16.

Lea was superb in Saigon—Lea was great in Les Miserables. She was perfect as Jasmin—she was stellar as Mulan.

But among the roles Lea played—I love her playing HERSELF the best—a world-class singer using her pitch-perfect voice on tone-deaf issues.

For her part, Lea thanked everyone who showed their support. She said she’s very grateful to people who expressed that they have her back.

“To everyone that has my back, thank you. You have my appreciation. I am very grateful.”
