On January 5, Kapuso directors LA Madridejos and Don Michael Perez lauded GMA Network’s bravery in telling diverse and inspiring stories.
During the media conference for the series Little Princess, Madridejos thanked GMA Network for creating stories that prioritize diversity.
Perez added that GMA Network has always had the guts to gamble on new ways of storytelling.
Several years ago, with the same creative team, we did Destiny Rose. Very unconventional ‘yung lead, ‘yung choice ng subject matter. Medyo sensitive ‘yung issues na tinatackle. So kudos talaga sa GMA for having the guts to gamble on new ways of story telling and new ways of creating characters.”
He also said they have been waiting and wishing for the Kapuso audience to mature.
“Natutuwa ako dahil ‘yung audience natin ngayon ay starting to catch on, siguro dahil na rin sa exposure na rin to streaming and to other forms of media. This is what we’ve been wishing for through all these years eh, na mag-mature ‘yung audience natin at tanggapin ang new ways of story telling.”
Madridejos then expressed his support to the current movement of providing better representation for marginalized characters on screen.
Hands down to them dahil nabibigyan nila ng justice ‘yung role.
“Pero I agree to some extent na mas authentic kapag ganon.
Perez also shared his thoughts on the matter, noting that people with personal experience related to the role could always portray characters genuinely.
“No amount of preparation, or no amount of training for any actor can equal the ability that somebody who’s the person portraying the character can provide. Kahit gaano pa kahusay ‘yung artista, iba pa rin talaga ‘yung kayang ibigay noong totoo.”
He added that maybe it was time for storytellers to explore those personal experiences to show more genuine characters on screen.
“At the same time, we have a lot of actors that can portray a lot of roles. At the same time, we have a lot of stories that we can get from these actors.
“Kung ano ka as an actor, ano ba ‘yung personal experience na hindi pa natin nailalabas, na hindi pa natin naikukwento, maybe it’s time that we explore that para lahat ng performances, lahat ng makikita nating characters on screen are genuine.”
As for their upcoming series, Little Princess stars Jo Berry, Rodjun Cruz, Juancho Trivino, Angelika Dela Cruz, Jestoni Alarcon, and Geneva Cruz. The inspirational series premieres on January 10, 2022, during GMA Afternoon Prime.
