‘Lilet Matias, Attorney-At-Law’ ‘needed’ three years of inspiration

The first legal series of GMA Network, ‘Lilet Matias, Attorney-At-Law,’ had to wait at least three years to find the perfect GMA Afternoon Prime show for Jo Berry, says the show’s head writer and concept creator J-mee Katanyag on February 24.

“In terms of inspiration, nagsimula po ito like two or three years ago. Isa sa mga inspirasyon po namin ay si Jo Berry, siya talaga. Hinahanapan namin siya ng isang palabas kung saan tatatak po muli ang kagalingan niya,’” she said during the series’ press conference at Manila City Hall.

Katanyag was looking for a concept that could follow the success of the Kapuso medical milieu program ‘Abot-Kamay Na Pangarap.’ Discovering the actress’ dream of becoming a legal representative through a documentary, the show’s head writer had a brilliant idea: to make a show about the Philippine justice system.

“Pangarap niyang maging lawyer. So doon pa lang, so parang napag-isipan na ‘What if gumawa tayo ng eksaktong may Abot-Kamay Na Pangarap na medical milieu serye, gawa rin tayo ng iba pang milieu serye na law system naman, o ‘yung justice system tapos si Jo Berry ‘yung representation na ‘yun.'”

That is how the show Lilet Matias, Attorney-At-Law, was born.

Apart from making the Kapuso star’s dream a reality, Katanyag also considered the need for Filipinos to be educated about the legal system in the country—through an entertaining and educating Kapuso show.

“Kung paano ‘yung mga katulad nung mga manonood natin, ‘yung mga kababayan natin, at ‘yung mga tao sa laylayan, ‘yung mga marginalized na Pilipino ay matuto tungkol sa legal system to be represented by Jo Berry.”

Catch it Monday through Friday at 3:20 p.m. on GMA Afternoon Prime and Pinoy Hits.
