Carlos Yulo’s much-anticipated reconciliation with his mother, Angelica Yulo, has been delayed following the public disclosure of their family issues, according to Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) President Cynthia Carrion.
In an interview with DWIZ, Carrion revealed that Carlos was deeply upset when his mother aired their family disagreements in the media. The situation has left Carlos questioning the motives behind the public statements, with Carrion indicating that the young gymnast even wondered if his mother wanted him to fail in his competitions.
“We are wondering why, in his stage of winnings, they will come up with media saying things against him. Carlos is just wondering, and we were wondering why? Carlos thinks that his mother wants him to lose,” Carrion stated.
Carrion has been working to mediate between Carlos and his mother, urging both sides to reconnect. “I’ve been trying to talk to the mother, I’ve been trying to make her reach out to her son and I’ve been trying to talk to Carlos to reach out to his mother. I want them to be talking, I want them to be a family,” she explained.
However, Carrion expressed concerns that continued media attention might further complicate the situation. She emphasized that Carlos needs to feel ready and willing to take the first step toward mending his relationship with his mother. “It has to come from him.. it has to come from his heart. As soon as he’s ready, he will do it… and Carlos is already thinking about it,” she added.
Carrion also called on the Yulo family to avoid making public statements that could escalate the situation. The issue initially gained traction after Angelica Yulo posted on social media, congratulating Japan following Carlos’ loss in a competition.
More recently, she praised her other children, Eldrew and Elaiza Yulo, for their thoughtful gifts, which some netizens interpreted as a subtle criticism of Carlos, who has remained distant since his recent successes. Although these posts have since been removed from Angelica’s public profile, they were reposted by netizens and covered by the media.
“So we would like people to… I mean the family not to come up with things in the media to make it big bigger. That’s all he (Carlos) wants,” Carrion noted.
The situation escalated when Angelica held a press conference with Atty. Raymond Fortun, further drawing attention to the family conflict.
