Former Ilocos Sur Governor Luis “Chavit” Singson has responded to the recent controversy involving a viral video that shows a lion allegedly being slapped by a caretaker at his Baluarte Zoo.
The footage, which has drawn widespread criticism, was seen as an instance of animal maltreatment.
In a statement made during the grand opening of BB.Q Chicken’s 11th Philippine branch at Festival Mall, Alabang, Singson clarified the situation. “Hindi naman totoo ‘yun. Ang lion mukhang inaantok kasi talagang puyat ‘yang mga ‘yan ‘pag gabi sumisigaw, nagsisigawan sila. Kaya talagang inaantok ‘yung mga lion,” Singson said.
He added that the caretaker involved was immediately dismissed. “Pero ‘yung lalaki na sabi nila na sinampal niya, pinatanggal ko agad. Hindi lang isa ‘yun mortal sin sa Baluarte, sa akin ‘yan kapag may nag maltrato ng [hayop]. Sabi niya laro lang naman nya ‘yun. Hindi naman niya sinaktan.”
Regarding the condition of the zoo’s other animals, Singson reassured, “Mabuti naman lahat sila. Awa ng Diyos wala pang kinakain na tao,” he quipped.
The incident received further attention when actress Nadine Lustre shared a post from the Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF) on her Instagram. The AKF criticized the treatment of the lion, and Lustre added, “You probably don’t know this but most of the time, big animals in zoos are drugged or physically threatened so they stay calm enough so people can take photos with them.” Lustre emphasized that animals would be happier in their natural habitats rather than being used for entertainment purposes.
Meanwhile, the BB.Q Chicken grand opening was a highlight of the day, marking the South Korean restaurant chain’s twelfth location in the Philippines since its inception in 2022. The event featured a range of Korean fried chicken, sides, and signature sauces, offering guests a memorable dining experience.
Chavit Singson, alongside Congresswoman Richelle Louise Singson-Michael, Vanessa Singson, and Carleen Singson, was present to celebrate the restaurant’s launch. The event was hosted by Rico Robles, adding a festive touch to the occasion.
