The popularity of love teams in the Philippines shows no signs of waning, with GMA Public Affairs’ new youth-oriented drama series, ‘MAKA,’ making a strong impression on viewers.
The show, which premiered recently, has successfully captured the attention of both Gen Z and nostalgic audiences, showcasing compelling stories filled with romance.
‘MAKA’ debuted to an enthusiastic reception, achieving a rating of 6.6 percent—significantly higher than the 1.4 percent rating of its competitor, according to preliminary data from NUTAM People Ratings by Nielsen Philippines.
Set in Douglas MacArthur High School for the Arts, the series follows students as they navigate the challenges of potentially losing their school. In a bid to keep it open, the students must succeed in the upcoming Regional Drama School Competition. The narrative raises the question of whether Sir V (played by Romnick Sarmenta), an acclaimed playwright and art theater director, will agree to teach in the Arts & Performance (A&P) section to help save the institution.
The show features an ensemble cast, including Zephanie Dimaranan, Ashley Sarmiento, Marco Masa, Olive May, John Clifford, Dylan Menor, Chanty Videla, Sean Lucas, and May Ann Basa (a.k.a. Bangus Girl). It also sees appearances from That’s Entertainment veterans Tina Paner, Jojo Alejar, Sharmaine Arnaiz, Maricar De Mesa, and seasoned actress Carmen Soriano.
