Duterte was arrested upon landing in the Philippines after returning from Hong Kong with his family. The warrant for his arrest was issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC), citing crimes against humanity linked to his administration’s controversial war on drugs.
According to a 2017 year-end accomplishment report by the Office of the President under Duterte’s leadership, an estimated 20,322 drug suspects were killed in the country between June 2016 and November 2017. The ICC’s case against Duterte stems from allegations of extrajudicial killings and human rights violations during his six-year presidency.
Following his arrest, Duterte was reportedly transported to The Hague to face legal proceedings related to the ICC’s charges.
