Beloved Filipino actor and director Ricky Davao has passed away at the age of 63, Viva Entertainment confirmed on Thursday, May 1.
Known for his remarkable versatility and dignified presence on both stage and screen, Davao’s career spanned over four decades and left a lasting imprint on Philippine entertainment.
Born Frederick Charles Caballes Davao on May 30, 1961, Ricky was the son of legendary actor Charlie Davao and the younger brother of Bing Davao. He began his career in the arts as a dancer with the Vicor Crowd, a discipline that would later influence the emotional depth he brought to his performances in theater, television, and film.
Throughout his career, Davao starred in acclaimed movies such as ‘Saranggola’, ‘Mga Pusang Gala’, ‘American Adobo’, ‘Minsan May Isang Puso’, and ‘F#@bois*’, and earned recognition for his transformative portrayals — from political icons to complex villains. On television, he became a household name, most notably as Eduard Rodrigo in the hit series ‘Mula sa Puso’.
He also shone behind the scenes, directing a number of film and TV projects that showcased his keen storytelling sensibilities.
Davao was last seen in the musical production ‘Silver Lining Redux’. His final film appearance was in ‘Monday First Screening’, opposite Gina Alajar, under the direction of Benedict Mique. The story, which explored love in later years, mirrored Davao’s personal philosophy: “We just need to be happy.”
In 2024, it was reported that Davao had been diagnosed with a terminal illness, though his family chose to keep the specifics private. Longtime columnist Cristy Fermin previously revealed that Davao’s loved ones had asked for prayers amid his health challenges.
Davao was previously married to actress Jackie Lou Blanco. Though the two eventually separated, they remained on good terms and shared three children — Kenneth, Arabella, and Rikki Mae. In 2021, the former couple reunited onscreen for ‘I Can See You: AlterNate’, a moment that resonated with fans who had followed their journey for decades.
Known for guarding his privacy while exuding sincerity in every role, Davao was admired not just for his artistry but for his humility. In recent years, he had found happiness with his partner Malca Darocca, quietly embracing a new chapter in life.
In addition to his artistic pursuits, Davao once stepped into politics, filing his candidacy for Quezon City councilor in 2010, though he later withdrew. It was a move that reflected his desire to contribute to public service and civic engagement.
His passing is deeply mourned by colleagues, fans, and fellow artists. Tributes have poured in on social media, remembering Ricky Davao not just as a consummate professional, but as a gentleman of Filipino cinema — grounded, passionate, and deeply human.
As the curtain falls on a storied career, the legacy of Ricky Davao will continue to inspire generations of artists and storytellers.
LionhearTV extends its deepest condolences to the Davao family.
