TV host and journalist Bianca Gonzalez-Intal has ignited an online discussion after pointing out the high cost of local travel in the Philippines, particularly when compared to trips to nearby Asian destinations.

In a post shared on X, Bianca compared the expenses of a domestic vacation to Siargao with international travel, expressing frustration over the rising cost of supporting local tourism.
“Bakit ganun. We booked a trip to Siargao and it is more expensive than a trip to Hong Kong, Bangkok, or Vietnam. Mas mahirap suportahan ang lokal na turismo dahil ang mahal,” Bianca wrote.
Her statement quickly gained traction online, with many netizens agreeing and sharing similar experiences. Several users echoed the sentiment that traveling to popular Philippine destinations such as Siargao, Palawan, and Boracay can be significantly more expensive than visiting other countries in Southeast Asia.
The discussion intensified after Bianca retweeted a post by business executive Gregorio Y. Larrazabal, which highlighted the same concern. The tweet noted how high airfare and travel-related expenses make it difficult for Filipinos to prioritize local destinations over international ones.
In recent days, Siargao also trended on X as travel season approached, alongside circulating graphics from Bilyonaryo that read: “Is Philippine tourism losing its edge? Pinoy travelers find international travel more affordable compared to Palawan and Boracay.”
The article suggested that the Department of Tourism (DOT) may need to conduct a price competitiveness analysis to ensure Philippine destinations can better compete with neighboring countries known for affordable travel.
Netizens shared candid comparisons based on personal travel experiences. Others pointed to broader issues beyond cost, including infrastructure, safety, and tourism marketing. Some also highlighted how the Philippines compares from a foreign tourist’s perspective.
As of this writing, the Department of Tourism has yet to issue an official response to the renewed calls for more affordable domestic travel and competitive pricing across Philippine tourist destinations.
