TV personality BB Gandanghari has sparked buzz on social media after hinting that a biographical film about late Ateneo basketball player Rene “Bobet” Baterbonia may already be in the works.
On Instagram, BB shared posts suggesting preparations for the project have begun, including what appeared to be a casting teaser for the actors who will portray Rene and his parents.
“The Search is ON…. Who will be?! Mommy Rovelyn, Daddy Rene and BOBET!! Abangan…” BB wrote.
In another post, BB shared a photo wearing Rene’s basketball jersey as a tribute to the late athlete.
“It is with deep respect and honor that I get to wear your jersey, even just for a day. We will not forget…”
The posts immediately generated excitement among many supporters, who welcomed the possibility of seeing Rene’s life story brought to the big screen.
Several netizens expressed hope that the film would honor the young basketball player’s legacy and inspire more people through his story.
However, not everyone reacted positively.
Some critics questioned BB’s reported involvement in the project, with a few accusing her of allegedly capitalizing on the tragedy. Others questioned her qualifications should she indeed direct the film.
Despite the criticisms, many supporters came to BB’s defense, saying her continued support for Rene’s family should not be interpreted negatively.
Some also pointed out that the proposed film aims to preserve Rene’s legacy and could help support projects that would honor his memory.
Earlier this week, BB spoke about her close involvement with Rene’s family during her guest appearance on Fast Talk with Boy Abunda.
She revealed that it was her brother, Sen. Robin Padilla, who first visited Rene’s wake before she later decided to personally pay her respects.
BB said she eventually accompanied the family to Mindanao for Rene’s burial and even joined them in Aurora, where the tragic drowning incident occurred.
According to her, she wanted to provide moral support to Rene’s grieving parents.
“Naiintindihan ko yung sakit nung nawala sa pamilya, sa ina,” BB shared.
She also recalled the emotional moment when Rene’s mother offered flowers at the shoreline where the tragedy happened.
“Parang nagparamdam talaga,” she said, describing how the waves unexpectedly reached the flowers during the family’s tribute.
As of writing, BB has not officially confirmed details of the proposed biopic, including its production timeline or cast, nor has she responded to the online criticisms surrounding the project.
