Vice Ganda apologizes after ‘It’s Showtime’ jokes draw criticism online

Vice Ganda issued a public apology on ‘It’s Showtime’ after several jokes and comedy segments aired on the noontime program drew criticism from viewers, with some describing them as offensive or insensitive.

Before the show’s conclusion on Saturday, the comedian addressed the issue on behalf of the program, acknowledging the negative feedback that had circulated online following recent episodes, including portions of the ‘Memerimar’ segment.

“Gusto lang po naming magbigay ng isang mensahe. Nakarating po sa aming kaalaman na may mga madlang pipol na hindi nagustuhan o na-offend sa ilan sa aming mga jokes o biruan dito sa ‘Showtime,’ pati na rin sa mga ginagawa namin sa Memerimar.”

Vice added that the production never intended to offend its audience and emphasized that entertaining viewers has always been the show’s goal.

“They found the jokes offensive or insensitive. Gusto lang naming ipaalam sa inyo na the last thing we want is to displease you, o hindi mapasaya ang aming madlang pipol.”

The television host then formally apologized and assured viewers that the team would strive to improve.

“Kaya naman, ina-acknowledge po namin ang inyong sentimyento at humihingi po kami ng paumanhin sa inyo, and we will try to do better. Maraming-maraming salamat po.”

The apology came after a recent episode sparked backlash online, particularly over a comedy bit involving Baby Doll Johaira Moris. During the segment, Vice sprayed water toward Johaira and made the remark, “Bakit nagputik ka?” Some viewers criticized the joke, saying it could be interpreted as colorist or disrespectful because it referenced Johaira’s skin tone and involved spitting water during the skit.

The incident prompted widespread discussion on social media, with many users expressing disappointment. While several viewers accepted Vice’s apology, others argued that public figures should exercise greater sensitivity when making jokes, particularly those involving physical appearance or skin color. Some also questioned whether similar comedy routines remain appropriate in today’s media landscape.

Others, however, defended the comedian, saying the exchange occurred within the context of a comedy program and among performers who regularly joke with one another. They also noted Vice’s willingness to publicly acknowledge the criticism and apologize.

As of writing, ‘It’s Showtime’ has not announced any additional measures following the apology. Likewise, the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) has not publicly announced whether it will take any action regarding the episode.
