Why Smart Operations Are the New Competitive Advantage

Logistics has largely been viewed as a function focused on moving goods efficiently from warehouses to customers. As businesses navigate complex operations across physical stores and online platforms, industry leaders say competitive advantage now hinges on how quickly organizations can understand and respond to their operational dynamics.

Across Asia-Pacific, operational complexity continues to grow. Research cited by the Supply Chain Management Association of the Philippines (SCMAP) found that delivery costs increased by 18.9% year-on-year, while 44% of operators still struggle with real-time shipment visibility. Although organizations have invested heavily in digital tools, only a small percentage have reached the point where intelligence actively drives operational decisions.

For Philippine businesses, the challenge is even greater.

“The next competitive advantage isn’t simply having more data,” said Pierre Curay, President of SCMAP. “It’s shortening the time between seeing what’s happening and acting on it. Businesses that can sense issues early, make decisions quickly, and execute immediately will outperform organizations that are still relying on reports that arrive weeks after the opportunity, or the problem, has already passed.”

Curay noted that despite increased digital adoption, many companies still struggle with fragmented information, making it hard to spot inventory issues and fulfillment bottlenecks before they worsen. In the Philippines, where logistics is a major business cost, operational intelligence has become essential.

From visibility to operational intelligence

For Ninja Van Philippines, the evolution of logistics has shifted from simply delivering parcels toward building the operational infrastructure businesses need to make better decisions.

“Operational excellence starts with visibility,” said Vin Perez, Country Head of Ninja Van Philippines. “Businesses need confidence that inventory is available, products are on shelves, promotions are executed correctly, and issues can be identified before they affect customers. That’s where operational intelligence creates value.”

Building on the company’s nationwide logistics network, Ninja Van has expanded its technology ecosystem with Ninja FieldSight. This AI-powered retail intelligence platform transforms existing delivery infrastructure into a real-time source of market insights.

For Danielle Hung, Head of Business Development at Ninja Van Philippines, the solution was born from firsthand experience. Before joining the logistics industry, she worked with FMCG brands and saw the challenges of ensuring products remained visible and available across the country’s retail landscape.

“One thing has always remained true, whether I was working in sales or supply chain—we were obsessed with making sure our products were accessible to consumers every day,” Hung said. “To do that, brands relied on retail audits, but the data often arrived months later, when it was already too late to act.”

Recognizing this gap, Ninja Van leveraged the infrastructure it had already built across the country to reimagine the retail audit process. “We’re not asking brands to invest in a new network,” Hung explained. “We’re utilizing the same nationwide delivery infrastructure, paired with AI and real-time technology, to give businesses immediate visibility into what’s happening in stores. Instead of waiting months for reports, brands get actionable insights they can use right away.”

Through a network of thousands of daily riders, Ninja FieldSight enables businesses to verify product availability, monitor shelf execution, capture geotagged photo validation, and track competitor activity during existing delivery routes. AI supports riders by validating submissions and transforming field observations into a unified dashboard, eliminating much of the manual processing traditionally associated with retail audits.

“Ninja FieldSight gives brands detailed on-ground visibility in real time,” Hung added. “It helps identify availability gaps immediately and turns that information into actionable insights that improve operations, make businesses more efficient, and ultimately help brands build to last.”

Smarter operations enable faster growth

For fast-growing consumer brands, operational intelligence is crucial as scale brings added complexity. GRWM Cosmetics, which has transformed from an online startup to an omnichannel business with hundreds of SKUs and over 50 retail locations, has seen how operational visibility affects growth.

Chief Inventory Officer Morize Arenal emphasizes that as businesses grow, managing inventory and customer expectations becomes more challenging due to fragmented information. “Inventory accuracy and operational visibility are as important as product innovation,” Arenal stated.

The company’s shift to technology-enabled operations has led to inventory synchronization across channels, streamlined fulfillment, and allowed teams to focus on product development and market expansion instead of manual tasks.

The future belongs to businesses that can act faster

As Philippine businesses adapt to dynamic consumer behavior and rising expectations, operational intelligence is becoming crucial beyond logistics. Unified functions like inventory visibility and customer experience enhance growth opportunities.

Ninja Van aims to support this evolution by integrating its logistics infrastructure with AI solutions like Ninja FieldSight. This approach provides businesses with real-time visibility and enables faster, informed decision-making.

“As commerce becomes more complex, logistics must evolve beyond parcel movement,” said Perez. “We strive to be a long-term partner, helping businesses operate intelligently. With clearer insights, companies can respond quickly, improve customer service, and build resilient operations for the future.”
