Movie Review: ‘The Caretakers’—A haunting tale of motherhood, loss, and the supernatural

Horror films often rely on cheap jump scares and eerie background scores to elicit fear, but ‘The Caretakers’, directed by Shugo Praico, takes a more psychological and atmospheric approach, weaving a compelling story of motherhood, grief, and a house that refuses to let go of its past.

At its heart, ‘The Caretakers’ is not just a supernatural horror flick—it is a slow-burning psychological thriller that delves into familial bonds, trauma, and the eerie grip of the unknown.

The film presents an intriguing premise: what if the house you’re trying to sell is haunted by more than just memories?

Plot. The film follows Audrey (Iza Calzado), a mother desperate to move on from her past by selling her late husband’s ancestral home. But her plans are met with resistance—not just from the house’s longtime caretaker, Lydia (Dimples Romana), but from malevolent spirits lurking within its walls.

For Audrey, selling the house means securing a better future for her children. For Lydia, it’s about protecting something much darker. As supernatural events unfold, the battle between these two women becomes more than just a fight for ownership—it becomes a battle for survival.

Performance. The strongest aspect of ‘The Caretakers’ is the powerful performances of Iza Calzado and Dimples Romana. Their on-screen rivalry is filled with intensity and emotional depth, transforming what could have been a simple horror film into something much more profound.

Calzado delivers a nuanced portrayal of a grieving mother struggling to escape her past, while Romana effortlessly balances menace and vulnerability, keeping viewers guessing about her true motives.

The supporting cast also holds their own, particularly Althea Ruedas and Erin Espiritu, whose performances add emotional weight to the story. Marco Masa and Ashley Sarmiento deliver solid work, while Erika Clemente emerges as a young talent to watch.

Horror Elements. Unlike mainstream horror films that overload on jump scares, ‘The Caretakers’ takes its time in building tension and suspense. The eerie cinematography and unsettling atmosphere create a sense of dread that lingers throughout the film.

However, the use of CGI is a mixed bag—while some effects enhance the horror, others feel unnecessary and could have been executed better with practical effects. One highlight, though, is Dimples Romana’s airlift scene, which stands out as one of the film’s most visually striking moments.

Beyond the scares, ‘The Caretakers’ is a story about motherhood, loss, and the lengths people go to protect what they love. It raises compelling questions about who truly owns a home—the one who built it or the one who cared for it?

The film also subtly touches on the psychological effects of trauma and how it manifests in different ways, making it more than just a ghost story.

LionhearTV‘s Verdict. While ‘The Caretakers’ has some minor flaws—such as its occasionally underwhelming CGI and a resolution that could have been stronger—it remains a gripping and thought-provoking horror film.

For those who enjoy horror movies with emotional depth, atmospheric tension, and standout performances, ‘The Caretakers’ is a must-watch.
