After Aiza Seguerra wedded Liza Dino in California in December 2014; their union was an inspiration and on June 12, a former Kim in the West End musical ‘Miss Saigon’—Monique Wilson said ‘I DO’ with her long-time partner named Rossana Abueva in London.
Wilson came out via Philippine media as a lesbian in 2012. She gained fame at the age of 18 as an alternate to Lea Salonga’s role. She was also the director of One Billion Rising, a global movement against rape and sexual violence against women founded by Even Ensler. Abueva, on the other hand, is a Singapore-based banker.
Such marriages may still shock some Filipinos since the Philippines, as a Roman Catholic country and the only Catholic country in Asia that abides the doctrines of the Catholic Church, hasn’t passed the bill allowing opposite sex to put their relationship in print. However, in some countries, marriage between same-sex is accepted. For Filipino same-sex couples, saving up money to buy a visa and fly to the country where they can make their relationship legal in paper or legally married is one major goal. Homosexuality is accepted in our society, but the debate about putting a law for same sex marriage is far from reality. Not just yet.
Seguerra-Dino, Wilson-Abueva are just among the brave same-sex partners who define ‘love’ has no gender and does not discriminate.
On the invitation card posted on Abueva’s Facebook account reads: “After seventeen years, come celebrate our seven year civil partnership into a more revolutionary commitment: Marriage (in the eyes of the law), but really, the re-affirming of our radical union with those who have lived and laughed, cried and celebrated, rallied and protested, created and adventured with us these last seventeen years. Plant and ignite more fires with us!”
