Rape is one of the most difficult scenes to portray on TV and movies. It takes a lot of effort to do this and it can sometimes result in unintentional bruises if the actors aren’t careful. Still, if rape is part of the script, it must be done convincingly by the actors involved if they want to come off as realistic.
Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case in Marimar’s September 3, 2015 episode when Nicandro, played by Dion Ignacio, tried to sexually assault Marimar (Megan Young). The scene was mediocre to say the least. Watch the video here:
Unlike other actors who work hard to impress viewers, Megan lacked the proper eye movements, body language, and feelings to show that she was being “raped.” Like a helpless prey, she merely waited for Dion to take advantage of her without putting up a fight. She never reacted when Dion started unbuttoning her shorts and tore her top. It would have been the right time to strike back, but Megan appeared contented with her fate.
Professional actors normally attend acting workshops to hone their craft and look good in a scene. These workshops teach them to give the right expression, how to use their eyes to convey deep emotion or come up with the appropriate body language to express themselves.
Alas, Megan failed miserably as an actress in her rape scene. We don’t know if this is the first time she has done this, but we sincerely hope she does better next time. Given her potential, we believe she can improve as an actress with the right training.
