Several celebrities and netizens couldn’t help but shake their heads following President Rodrigo Duterte’s latest pronouncements about the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his weekly late-night public address, Monday, December 7, Duterte admitted that after 9 months he now realized the importance of mass testing to address the COVID-19 problem.

“Alam mo, ang importante pala, sa totoo lang, and I realize now, it’s the testing—‘yung swabbing pati ‘yung test.” Duterte said.

His statement elicited different reactions from celebrities and netizens to Duterte’s very late realization of the importance of mass testing.

Kapuso journalist Atom Araullo took to Twitter to share his take on Duterte’s latest remark.

Atom tweeted something like confused emoji together with GMA News’ tweet about Duterte’s super late realization.

Frankie Pangilinan on the other hand sarcastically tweeted saying “maybe the testing was inside of us all along”.

Musician Kean Cipriano meanwhile chided Duterte for realizing the value of mass testing just now.

“After nine months… seriously?,” Kean tweeted.

And for former PTV anchor Jules Guiang, he hoped Duterte will also finally realize the importance of human rights, that mananita and red-tagging are wrong and that activism is not terrorism.

“Kelan niya kaya masasabi ito: Ang importante, I realize now, are human rights. Ang importante, I realize now, that red-tagging is wrong. Ang importante, I realize now, that activism is not terrorism. Ang importante, I realize now, mañanita is wrong in a pandemic,” said Jules.

Meanwhile, Malacanang was quick to quell netizens’ reactions saying it’s not true that Duterte only realized the importance of COVID testing now.

According to Palace Spokesperson Harry Roque, netizen’s reactions have no basis because the government has always made it a priority to improve the country’s testing capacity.

“Hindi po totoo iyan, sa mula’t mula po ang ating prayoridad ay i-improve ang ating testing capacity,” Roque said

Here are other reactions from netizens about Duterte’s latest statement.

“Internet Explorer is trending, b/c netizens are mocking Duterte’s light bulb moment about the importance of swab tests. B/c just like Duterte ‘the 10-Sleeps-Ahead President,’ Internet Explorer is very slow. So, if you see Internet Explorer trending here today, now you know,” said @mrfrankbaraan.

Palanca award winner Ogie Rosa also reacted. “Ang daming nagsasabing hindi na raw dapat hanapin o kalampagin si Duterte kasi alam nito ang dapat gawin. Oo, si Duterte na 9 months bago naisip na importante ang swab tests.”

“You know what’s f*ckd up? When the govt realizes that testing is very important as one of the control measures, 9 months into this pandemic. Nasabihan pa tayong mga OA when we asked for mass testing last May. Ano ngayon? Nga-nga tayong lahat,” @tom_md_ tweeted.

“Now that Duterte realizes the importance of mass testing, let’s look back at some of the confusing stance of the government on mass testing,” said @tetsmakino.

“I’d love to see how DDS ([especially] the “intellectual” ones) walk back on their schtick that mass testing is impossible, now that their poon says mass testing is important (several months too late),” tweeted @arbetbernardo.

@mrsunlawyer meanwhile chided COVID advise Dr. Edsel Salvana for previously saying that the country doesn’t need mass testing.

“I hope Dr. SitDown realizes he has blood on his hands when he let his narcissism stand in the way of mass testing back then. As someone who knew people who died from COVID, up yours, you fucking Science Mocha, and everyone who enabled the breathtaking incompetence of this admin”

“After nine months, Duterte realizes the importance of testing. Interestingly, Roque claims Duterte is always 10 steps ahead. This begs the question: 10 steps ahead of who? The rest of the world has known that testing is key. #DisinfectWithGas, “ said @miamagdalena.

“Yan ba ang 10 steps ahead si Duterte ha Roque? Why only now he realizes na kailangan ang mass testing, nagsayang kyu ng panahon at billions of taxpayers monies, almost 10 months na po ang quarantine and yet libo libo pa rin positive cases! Ang galeng ng 10 steps ahead nyu! Hayy!” said @saudiboy2.
