On October 5, Kim Atienza clarified details about his brand as a broadcaster now that he’s transferring to GMA Network, including the ‘weather-weather lang’ tagline and his monicker ‘Kuya Kim.’
During the media conference for his Kapuso welcome, Atienza confirmed ABS-CBN has a copyright to the ‘weather-weather lang’ tagline.
“That was talked about in my old company seven years ago. Because I had an endorsement that used ‘Weather-Weather lang,’ and then it was finally [settled]. But ‘Weather-Weather lang’ is owned by ABS-CBN.”
He also shared a bit of trivia history to the origins of his famous one-liner.
“Although the history of ‘Weather-Weather lang’ that was popularized by Leo Martinez in ang mga Susunod na Kabanata. Siya si Congressman Manhik Manaog, ‘Ang buhay ay weather-weather lang.’ Siya nagpa-uso niyan eh.
“And then, it was picked up by Erap when he became president, noong sinabi niya na, ‘Ang Buhay, pag ikaw ay natalo sa politika, pasensya na, ang buhay weather-weather lang.’ But it was Leo Martinez who popularized that.”
However, Atienza clarified that his monicker Kuya Kim belongs to him.
“And then it became my tagline when I started out in ABS-CBN. But the name, ‘Weather-Weather lang’ is also the segment, the weather segment, so ABS-CBN owns that. So may copyright sila diyan. But the Kuya is mine. I can call myself Kuya anytime.”
Atienza also noted that everyone knew him as Kuya Kim before he transferred networks.
“Pag tinawag mo ako ng ibang pangalan, maninibago ang tao eh. Pag tinawag mo akong Mr. Kim, parang Korean restaurant ang dating. Pag tinawag mo akong Kim lang, parang Korean actor ang dating. Kinasanayan na nag tao ang Kuya eh, and there’s–ano ‘yan kumbaga hindi basta tinatawag na Kuya eh. Ang matawag ka na Kuya, you earned it eh.
“Ang matawag ako na Kuya, at dumikit, ay nako talagang blessing ni Lord ‘yun. Talagang hindi ko makakalimutan ‘yun. And of course, I would like to be called Kuya still. Kahit tatay ko, Kuya ang tawag sa akin eh. Kuya Kim ang tawag sa akin. Kahit lolo ko, Kuya Kim ang tawag sa akin dahil kinasanayan. Hindi naman siguro kailangan baguhin.”
As for rebranding and repacking his image, Atienza said he trusts GMA Network with this task.
“As far as repackaging, as far as [maybe] tweaking [maybe]– the image, of course, the creatives of the station would be able to do that. Syempre ibang Kuya Kim naman ang dapat nilang makita dito.
“And, I’m sure that they have plans, and I’m sure the plans will be exciting and beautiful. But, the essence will be the same. The essence is the old Kuya Kim that you know but 2.0. Rebranded and repackaged. On steroids, kumbaga.”
Earlier, Atienza transferred to GMA Network after 17 years of being a Kapamilya. He hosted various programs within the network, such as ‘Matanglawin,’ and ‘It’s Showtime.’
Atienza already has three shows lined up for his new chapter in the Kapuso network. He will have a segment in 24 Oras and two shows, Mars Pa More and Dapat Alam Mo.
