The Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) for the year 2023 has emerged triumphant, achieving a remarkable feat by securing a new box office record, marking the most substantial success since the festival’s resurgence during the pandemic.
As of January 2, 2024, the total box office gross receipts for all MMFF films have soared past the 700 million pesos milestone, according to the Chairman of MMFF, Atty. Don Artes.
“Nareach na po namin ‘yung target na gross reciepts at meron pa po tayong natitirang 4 na araw na showing so ang tinitingnan namin ay kung magpapatuloy ‘yung dagsa ng tao sa sinehan ay baka po madoble ang kinita nitong nakaraang taon,” stated MMFF Chairman Atty. Don Artes in response to queries from MJ Felipe.
The committee had set 700 million pesos as their target for this year, and they assert that a “great majority” of the films participating in the competition have achieved significant success.
According to earlier reports from LionhearTV, the film ‘Rewind’ by Star Cinema is expected to achieve a box office revenue of no less than 400 million pesos in the coming days.
This estimate is based on information from reliable sources, although it is not yet official. The MMDA will release the official figures after the festival concludes on January 7.
‘Mallari’ and ‘Gomburza’ have also showcased commendable box office performances, currently holding the second and third positions.
As per entertainment blogger Rod Magaru and his sources, Piolo Pascual’s film ‘Mallari’ has already amassed 90 million pesos, while ‘Gomburza’ is inching closer to the 50 million peso mark.
Nevertheless, the current top grosser, ‘Rewind,’ maintains a significant lead, making it the most successful film of 2023. It has surpassed the box office earnings of MMFF entries ‘Deleter’ (234M pesos) and ‘Partners In Crime’ (168M pesos).
