Dawn Chang schools Sen. Robin Padilla on marital rape remarks

Former ‘Pinoy Big Brother’ housemate Dawn Chang addressed Senator Robin Padilla’s controversial comments on marital rape, emphasizing the importance of consent and mutual respect in relationships.

In a tweet on X (formerly Twitter), Chang stated, “Your spouse isn’t your property. Intimacy should be about mutual desire and respect, not one-sided demands. If one partner isn’t in the mood, it’s important to communicate and understand each other’s needs. Consent and empathy are key, not pressure or guilt.”

Chang’s remarks were in response to Padilla’s statements during a Senate Committee on Public Information and Mass Media hearing on August 15. Padilla, who chairs the committee, sparked outrage by suggesting that husbands have “sexual rights” over their wives and questioned what a man should do if his wife refuses to engage in sexual activity.

“Di mo maiaalis sa mag-asawa na ang paniwala, lalo kami, ako, meron kang sexual rights sa asawa mo eh,” Padilla said during the hearing. He further asked, “Paano ‘yun ‘pag ayaw ng asawa mo, so wala pong ibang paraan talaga kung para ma-‘ano’ ‘yung lalaki?”

Attorney Lorna Kapunan, present at the hearing, responded by emphasizing the need for mutual respect within marriage. “Counseling po ang kailangan. Magdasal na lang kayo,” she advised, highlighting the importance of respecting a spouse’s decision, regardless of the situation.

Padilla’s comments quickly drew criticism on social media, with many expressing disappointment over his views on marital consent. Atty. Chel Diokno, a former senatorial candidate, also weighed in, saying, “Husbands do not have ‘sexual rights’ over their wives. Lahat ng kababaihan ay may pantay na pagkatao at kalayaan sa sarili. No means no. Respeto lang yan.”

In response to the backlash, Senator Padilla issued an apology, acknowledging that his remarks may have offended some during the Senate hearing. Despite his apology, the discussion around his comments continues to ignite debate across social media platforms.
