Actor Coco Martin, known for his role in ‘FPJ’s Batang Quiapo,’ opened up about the challenges he faced in his career, revealing that he once “cursed” ABS-CBN after being rejected by the network due to his early image as a “bold star.”
In an emotional interview with showbiz reporter Ogie Diaz, which aired on Wednesday, November 20, Martin recalled how he was once dismissed by ABS-CBN, despite his potential, because of his background in indie and sexy films.
Martin shared that before landing his big break, he faced significant ridicule and was often belittled for his previous roles in indie films, such as Brillante Mendoza’s ‘Masahista.’ “Bago ako nabigyan ng break, lahat ng klase ng lait [natanggap ko],” Martin recalled.
The actor also recounted being rejected twice by ABS-CBN when the network perceived him as a “bold star,” leading to missed opportunities. Martin was initially offered a role in a love triangle with Shaina Magdayao and Rayver Cruz, but the offer was withdrawn after the production team discovered his past as a bold star. A similar situation occurred when he was offered a role as Judy Ann Santos’ gay best friend, but was again rejected.
According to Martin, a casting agent informed his handler, “‘Sexy actor pala si Coco Martin, e alam mo naman ang ABS-CBN may image e.’”
This rejection hurt deeply. “Sinumpa ko talaga noon ang ABS, honestly,” he admitted. “Ang sakit e. Ang baba ng tingin sa’yo tapos ikaw ang taas ng respeto mo sa trabaho mo.”
Despite the setbacks, Martin’s journey took a positive turn when the late Jaclyn Jose encouraged him to audition for ABS-CBN’s ‘Ligaw na Bulaklak.’ He was cast with the help of director Andoy Ranay, though Ranay later left the project.
It was during this time that Martin’s acting talent was truly recognized, and he eventually gained the respect of the production team. This marked the turning point in his TV career, leading to the success he enjoys today.
Looking back, Martin has clearly moved past the pain of rejection. Since then, he has become a household name, starring in major hits like ‘FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano’ and ‘FPJ’s Batang Quiapo.’
