Award-winning comedian and actor Pepe Herrera takes on one of his most daring roles yet, portraying Satanas in Viva Films’ ‘Sampung Utos Kay Josh’.
The film, directed by Marius Talampas, is set to hit theaters nationwide on January 29, 2025, and promises a thought-provoking narrative packed with humor and lessons about morality.
Fresh off his performance as Lods (Jesus Christ) in the 2023 blockbuster ‘Rewind’, Herrera admitted that playing Satanas was a completely different challenge, especially as the role sparked mixed reactions from his family.
At the film’s press conference, Herrera shared how his father, a devout Catholic, struggled with his decision to take on the role.
“Actually, hindi pa ipinapalabas yung trailer, ipinakita ko pa lang sa tatay ko, na-offend na siya,” Herrera revealed. “‘Ano ba yan anak, ipinu-promote mo si Satanas? Bakit ka naman tumanggap ng ganyang role?’”
Despite his father’s concerns, Herrera explained that the film is a comedy with no intention of offending anyone.
“The intention is to entertain and impart lessons,” he clarified, acknowledging the possibility of differing opinions from viewers. “Kung merong ma-offend, e di magso-sorry tayo, and we will explain na the intention is not to offend.”
Herrera admitted that playing Satanas was physically and emotionally demanding, especially compared to his portrayal of Jesus Christ.
“Mas mahirap ho yung demonyo kasi naapektuhan ang tatay ko,” he said. “Pero exciting rin na mag-portray ng ganitong character. Gusto kong lumikha ng ibang klaseng role.”
‘Sampung Utos Kay Josh’ follows the life of Josh, a devout and kind-hearted loan executive played by Jerald Napoles. Raised to strictly follow the Ten Commandments, Josh faces a series of unfortunate events that lead him to question his beliefs and values. In his desperation, Josh decides to rebel by breaking the commandments one by one, thinking it may bring him solace.
Director Marius Talampas described the film as more than just a comedy: “This is not merely a film—it is a visceral, cathartic experience that delves into the heart of what it means to be human. It challenges us to confront our doubts and beliefs.”
The film features a powerhouse supporting cast, including Albie Casiño, Bobot Mortiz, Irma Adlawan, Ashley Rivera, Debbie Garcia, James Caraan, and Donna Cariaga. Each character plays a vital role in Josh’s journey of rebellion and self-discovery.
Catch ‘Sampung Utos Kay Josh’ in theaters nationwide starting January 29, 2025.
