McCoy de Leon takes on challenging role in upcoming film ‘In Thy Name’

On March 20, 2000, the Abu Sayyaf’s hostage-taking in Basilan made headlines. Father Rhoel Gallardo, a Claretian priest, was abducted in the town of Sumisip, along with a number of students and faculty members. There were also captives from the town of Tuburan. Led by Khadaffy Janjalani and Abu Sabaya, the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) had every intention of making their lives hell.

Now, 25 years later, the viewing public will get to have an account of what transpired up in the mountains where the captives were detained until the decisive battle between the military and the terrorists in “In Thy Name”, a film by Ceasar Soriano, co-directed by Rommel Galapia Ruiz.

Starring Mccoy De Leon as Father Rhoel, see how this brave and faithful priest tried to keep it together in the midst of extreme violence for 45 days, for the sake of his fellow victims, especially a young boy named Reylios.

Father Rhoel, born November 29, 1965, was ordained a priest in 1994. He was known as an innately reserved fellow, yet he made an effort to clown around to make people feel at ease. He intended to live a life of service, so much so that he volunteered to be assigned to a parish in Basilan despite knowing the dangers. He vowed to never leave his flock no matter what.

JC De Vera plays Khadaffy Janjalani, brother of ASG founder Abdurajak Abubakar Janjalani. He took over the role as the group’s amir (head) when his brother died in a police operation in 1998. He was driven by a powerful vision of creating an Islamic state. His deep-seated animosity toward Christianity was starkly evident in the brutal treatment of Father Rhoel.

Mon Confiado plays Abu Sabaya, the ASG spokesperson known for his extreme cruelty toward hostages. It is said that Abu Sabaya took an interest in one of the teachers they held hostage.

Jerome Ponce plays 23-year-old Second Lieutenant Herbert Dilag, an Igorot mestizo from Kalinga. In April 2000, he volunteered to lead the “Suicide Squad” that was formed to attack Camp Abdurajak, Punoh Muhadji, the largest Abu Sayyaf camp where the hostages were held.

Yves Flores plays First Lt. Andrew Bacala, a 24-year-old commanding officer of the 24th Special Forces Company. Known for making decisive moves under pressure, he led the rescue mission as the ASG was trying to escape with their hostages.

Soliman Cruz plays Principal Rey Rubio of the Claret School of Basilan, Father Rhoel’s closest confidant. He was loved by all for his kindness, wisdom, and integrity. Principal Rubio’s physical weakness had long been a concern, but during their whole ordeal, he refused to stand by idly, offering support and strength to his companions.

Aya Fernandez plays Teacher Theresa. Only in her 20s, she was very nurturing, often extending her care beyond the classroom. In the hands of the Abu Sayyaf, Teacher Theresa would risk her safety to protect her students and friends. Her feistiness drew the attention of Abu Sabaya.

Kenken Nuyad plays Reylios, the sidekick of Father Rhoel who seems to idolize him. While they were in Punoh Muhadji, he would often wander around, interacting with the Muslim children and even members of the Abu Sayyaf Group.

Cassy Lavarias plays Emylin, also a child hostage. She acted like an older sister to Reylios and other younger captives. She was a beacon of hope and courage, even in the darkest moments.

Alex Medina plays Teacher Rosebert who was often mistaken for a military soldier because of his robust physique and distinctive hairstyle. He provided much-needed comic relief in a very tense atmosphere, and frequently shared stories of his deep love for his wife.

Elora Españo plays Teacher Lydda, Rosebert’s wife. Both of them worked at Sinangcapan Elementary School. Teacher Lydda had a strict demeanor, but was actually a funny lady. She was responsible for cooking and preparing food for both the rebels and the hostages.

Kat Galang plays Teacher Anabelle, best friend of Teacher Theresa. Normally more meek and quiet, Anabelle’s demeanor changed when her dear friend was taken by Abu Sabaya. She was a source of comfort and strength for the group.

This film also stars Ynez Veneracion as Teacher Gemma, Martin Escudero as Isnilon, JM Soriano as Abu Jandal, Ana Abad Santos as Raquel Gallardo, mother of Father Rhoel, Richard Quan as Dominador Gallardo, father of Father Rhoel, Gold Aceron as Dong Gallardo, brother of Father Rhoel with special needs, Aaron Villaflor as Captain Sabban, Pen Medina as MNLF Commander Talib Congo, and John Estrada as BGen. Narciso Abaya.

Produced by GreatCzar Media Productions, “In Thy Name” is an inspiring story of unwavering faith, love for peace, and unwavering heroism.

Various articles have been written about how Father Rhoel always prayed during captivity, and encouraged everyone to not lose hope. This can be seen in the 90-second “In Thy Name” movie teaser. Through all the hardships and atrocities, there is Father Rhoel surrendering everything to the mercy of God.

“In Thy Name” is a must-see film this 2025 as we celebrate the Jubilee Year of Hope. Opens in cinemas nationwide this Ash Wednesday, March 5.
