BINI member Gwen Apuli has spoken up after receiving flak over her comments about Pinoy street food, particularly her statement that she prefers turon without sugar.

In an interview on Ogie Diaz’s vlog on August 29, Gwen explained that her preference came from how she grew up in Bicol.
“Oo, sanay talaga po ako sa turon na walang sugar. Kasi as in lalo kung taga-Bicol po, mostly, hindi ko po nilalahat kasi siyempre iba-iba pa rin, mostly talaga sa Bicol, lumaki akong walang sugar ‘yung turon,” Gwen shared.
She also apologized for the way she pronounced the Pinoy delicacy during BINI’s guesting on People Vs. Food, which sparked the criticism.
“Pasensya na po, hindi ko alam ‘yung English ng turon so napa-slang na lang tayo,” she said.
The P-Pop idol admitted that the negative remarks affected her, especially when some bashers dragged her family into the issue. She said it even reached a point where her mother almost responded to the hateful comments.
Gwen further pointed out that the street food backlash was unfairly connected to old clips of her from ‘Pinoy Big Brother’, where she was also teased about eating a lot.
“Medyo naka-move on na rin po ako do’n sa issue before… Tina-try lang nila i-connect do’n sa issue ulit ngayon ‘yong sa street food po namin, which I don’t get din kasi parang iba naman ‘yong kinain ko do’n sa street food,” she explained.
Despite the criticisms, Gwen remains focused on her music career with BINI, who continue to ride high on their chart-topping hits and growing popularity.
