What happens when a young island girl is forced to grow up way too soon? This week’s ‘Magpakailanman’ episode tells the heart-wrenching yet inspiring story of Shuvee Etrata, a small-town girl with big dreams and an even bigger heart.
Airing this August 9 (Saturday), Shuvee plays as herself in an episode titled Pinoy Big Breadwinner: The Shuvee Etrata Story. Get ready to discover her life and realities before her newfound success as PBB’s Island Ate ng Cebu.
Joining her in the special offering are Gabby Eigenmann, Sharmaine Arnaiz, Christian Antolin, Miguel Diokno, Rathian Cordero, Aliyah Marie Cortez, and Juharra Asayo.
Born and raised in a remote island province, Shuvee’s life is far from idyllic. From a young age, she endures relentless bullying from classmates and neighbors. But even worse than the cruelty outside is the pain within the walls of her own home.
Shuvee learns how to stretch a meal, soothe a crying sibling, and protect her younger brothers and sisters from the same hurt she had to endure.
At one point, she holds a dream close to her chest—the dream of becoming a doctor. But that dream must be put on hold indefinitely when survival comes first.
Eventually, Shuvee makes a difficult decision to leave her island and move to Manila. The city that’s too loud, unfamiliar, and unkind in its own ways, but offers the one thing she desperately needs—a chance.
But as she rebuilds her life, cracks start to form in the relationships she thought she could hold onto. Her connection with her parents, already fragile, begins to fray completely. With each step toward freedom, she feels the guilt, anger, and confusion of a daughter torn between her duty and her right to dream.
Under the helm of Neal del Rosario, written by John Roque, and researched by Georis Tuca, this episode brings to light a story that mirrors the silent struggles of breadwinners, who are strong, selfless, and unseen.
