Actress-turned-politician Aiko Melendez confirmed on Friday, October 3, that she and her longtime partner, Zambales 1st District Representative Jay Khonghun, have ended their relationship after almost eight years.

In an official statement released on social media and first read by her manager Ogie Diaz, Aiko said their decision to part ways was made “mutually” after months of careful thought.
“After four months of reflection and careful consideration, Congressman Jay Khonghun and I, Councilor Aiko Melendez, have mutually decided to part ways and go our separate directions,” she wrote.
“This decision was not made lightly but comes from a place of respect and understanding of what is best for both of us at this time. We want to make it clear that no third party was involved in this decision.”
The Quezon City 5th District councilor, who has been with Khonghun since 2017, emphasized that they remain thankful for the years they shared and the support they received from the public throughout their journey as a couple.
“We remain grateful for the memories we shared and for the support many of you have shown throughout our journey together. Our focus now is to move forward with grace. He in his continued public service, and I in mine, always guided by the values of respect, kindness, and dedication to the people we serve,” Aiko added.
She also appealed for understanding as both of them transition to separate lives.
“We ask for your understanding and privacy as we go through this transition. Thank you for your support and prayers.”
The breakup surprised many in showbiz and political circles as Aiko and Jay had just celebrated their seventh anniversary in November 2024. At the time, they even brushed off talk of the so-called “7-year itch.”
Aiko and Jay went public with their relationship in 2018. In interviews, the actress often praised the congressman for being close to her children, Andre (with actor Jomari Yllana) and Marthena (with former husband Martin Jickain).
“He’s the one boyfriend I had my kids found approachable. They go to him when they have problems,” Aiko said in a past interview.
Both had busy careers in politics—Aiko serving as QC councilor since 2022 (a post she previously held from 2001–2010), and Jay currently representing Zambales’ 1st District in Congress.
Jay, a civil engineering graduate from Mapua University, first entered politics in 2004 as a provincial board member. He later served three terms as Subic mayor (2010–2019), became Zambales vice governor (2019–2022), and is now serving in Congress.
Aiko, meanwhile, is also known for her successful acting career, balancing her duties in public service with her showbiz commitments.
