Using the HONOR X9d 5G feels less like handling a typical mid-range smartphone and more like carrying a device that’s been built for real life—the kind where accidents happen, phones slip from pockets, rain catches you off guard, and battery anxiety is very real.
Kicking off 2026, HONOR Philippines clearly wants to make a statement with what it calls its most durable phone yet, and after spending time with the X9d 5G, that claim doesn’t feel like empty marketing.

Right out of the box, the phone feels reassuringly solid. My review unit came in Sunrise Gold, which not only looks premium but also adds grip—something you appreciate when you’re constantly on the move.
The design is familiar to anyone who’s used the X9 series before, but the shift to a flat display and flat sides improves handling and makes the phone feel more secure in the hand. The circular camera module gives it a clean, modern look, even if only three of the four cutouts are functional.
Durability is where the X9d 5G really defines its identity. In everyday use, it inspires confidence. HONOR’s All-Angle Ultra Defense design combines a metal frame, ultra-tough tempered glass, and multi-layer shock absorption.
Knowing that it’s rated to survive drops of up to 2.5 meters changes how you treat the phone—you worry less about setting it down on rough surfaces or pulling it out in risky environments. Add to that its IP66, IP68, and IP69K ratings, and it becomes a device you don’t panic over when it’s raining hard, splashed with water, or exposed to dust. While it’s still not something you’d intentionally abuse, it feels far more forgiving than most phones in this price range.

The 6.79-inch AMOLED display is another highlight in daily use. With a 120Hz refresh rate and up to 6,000 nits of peak brightness, the screen remains clear and punchy even under harsh sunlight. Scrolling feels smooth, animations are fluid, and watching videos or playing games is genuinely enjoyable thanks to deep blacks and vibrant colors. The display is also packed with eye comfort features, which made long reading and browsing sessions noticeably easier on the eyes.
Performance-wise, the jump to the Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 is immediately noticeable compared to the previous generation. Everyday tasks—messaging, social media, browsing, and switching between apps—feel smooth and responsive. With 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, multitasking rarely becomes an issue.
Gaming performance is solid for a mid-range device: titles like Call of Duty Mobile and Genshin Impact run comfortably at medium to high settings, and the VC Ice Cooling System does a good job of keeping temperatures in check during longer sessions.

The camera experience is practical rather than flashy. The 108MP main camera with OIS produces sharp, natural-looking photos in good lighting, with respectable dynamic range and detail. It’s reliable enough that you can confidently use it as your main camera for everyday shots. The 5MP ultra-wide lens is serviceable but unremarkable, and low-light performance, while usable, doesn’t match flagship-level detail once you start zooming in.
Selfies from the 16MP front camera look good, especially for social media, with portrait mode delivering pleasing background blur even if edge detection isn’t perfect. Overall, the camera setup feels appropriate for the phone’s price—it won’t wow photography enthusiasts, but it gets the job done consistently.
Where the HONOR X9d 5G truly shines in daily life is battery endurance. The massive 8,300mAh silicon-carbon battery fundamentally changes how you use the phone. On moderate use, it easily lasts a full day and often pushes into a second day without needing a charge. Even with heavy usage—streaming, gaming, and constant connectivity—it holds up impressively.

When it’s finally time to plug in, 66W fast charging keeps downtime manageable, filling the battery in around an hour and a half. There’s no wireless charging, but given how long the battery lasts, it’s rarely missed.
Running MagicOS 9 on Android 15, the software experience is clean and modern. HONOR includes a thoughtful selection of AI tools like AI Eraser, AI Cutout, AI Upscale, Magic Text, and Magic Portal, which genuinely help with productivity and light content creation rather than feeling like gimmicks. The interface feels familiar and intuitive, with minimal bloatware getting in the way.
After using the HONOR X9d 5G as a daily driver, it’s clear who this phone is for. It’s designed for people whose lifestyles or work environments are a little rougher—those who value durability, battery life, and reliability above all else but still want modern performance and a capable display. It’s not perfect: the lack of a telephoto lens, expandable storage, and some minor camera limitations keep it from being a universal recommendation.
Still, at ₱18,999—or even less during the ₱17,999 pre-order period—the HONOR X9d 5G offers a rare combination of toughness and practicality. (with reports from Lau Balocos)
