‘Colony’ turns zombie horror into a terrifyingly intelligent survival thriller at SM Mall of Asia SCREENX premiere night

The premiere night of Colony last May 21, 2026, at SM Mall of Asia SCREENX delivered more than the usual horror movie experience.

What began as a highly anticipated advanced screening quickly evolved into an immersive night filled with suspense, adrenaline, fan interactions, and nonstop conversations about what many attendees described as one of the most refreshing zombie films in recent years.

From the moment guests arrived at the venue, the excitement surrounding the film was already impossible to miss. The lobby outside the SCREENX cinema buzzed with energy as moviegoers lined up at the registration area, eagerly discussing trailers, theories, and expectations for the film. Horror fans, media attendees, and content creators gathered together, many visibly excited to see how Colony would stand out in a genre that has already produced countless zombie stories over the years.

Bringing a cousin along to the premiere made the experience feel even more personal, especially since both shared the same appreciation for horror and survival films. The event became more than just a movie screening—it felt like a shared bonding experience among fans who genuinely enjoy the thrill of intense cinematic storytelling.

After registration, guests claimed complimentary snacks before entering the SCREENX theater. Even before the movie started, the atmosphere inside already felt alive. Groups posed for photos, discussed favorite zombie films, and exchanged predictions about what kind of outbreak or creatures Colony would introduce. The anticipation inside the cinema steadily built as trailers and promotional visuals played across the massive multi-screen setup.

While waiting for the screening to begin, several conversations with fellow attendees and content creators naturally unfolded. Many were eager to talk about the growing popularity of elevated horror films and how audiences today expect more than traditional jump scares. Some creators even agreed to participate in interviews after the screening, already anticipating strong reactions once the movie ended.

But once the lights dimmed and Colony officially began, the atmosphere inside the theater changed instantly.

What immediately made the film stand out was its approach to the zombies themselves. Rather than portraying them as mindless infected creatures driven only by instinct, Colony introduced a far more disturbing concept—zombies capable of sharing information through a telepathic connection. This single idea transformed the entire tension of the movie.

Every encounter suddenly carried a deeper sense of danger because the infected did not operate independently. Once one zombie discovered survivors, others appeared to react almost immediately, creating the terrifying impression that the entire infected population functioned as one collective consciousness. The film used this concept effectively to keep viewers constantly uneasy, removing the predictability that often exists in traditional zombie films.

The telepathic connection became one of the movie’s strongest and most memorable elements because it changed the rules of survival entirely. Hiding no longer felt safe. Escaping one infected individual did not guarantee protection because information spread rapidly among them. The film repeatedly reinforced the idea that the survivors were not simply outrunning monsters—they were being tracked by an interconnected intelligence.

The SCREENX format amplified the experience dramatically. Chase scenes extended beyond the main screen and wrapped into the side projections, making viewers feel surrounded by chaos during outbreak sequences and attacks. Certain moments felt almost physically immersive, especially during scenes where hordes of infected closed in from multiple directions. The expanded visuals intensified the panic and claustrophobia that the movie carefully built throughout its runtime.

Audience reactions inside the cinema reflected how deeply engaged everyone became. Sudden gasps erupted during brutal reveals, while moments of silence filled the room during emotionally tense scenes. Some viewers instinctively leaned forward during suspenseful sequences, while others nervously laughed after shocking moments broke the tension. The collective reactions inside the theater made the screening experience even more thrilling.

Beyond the horror itself, Colony also succeeded because of its pacing and atmosphere. The film balanced large-scale outbreak scenes with quieter moments focused on fear, trust, and survival. Instead of relying purely on gore, it built psychological tension around uncertainty and paranoia. The idea that the infected could communicate and adapt created an ongoing feeling that nowhere was truly safe.

By the time the credits rolled, the energy inside the theater immediately shifted into loud discussions and excited reactions. Groups gathered outside the cinema debating favorite scenes, memorable deaths, and the terrifying implications of the telepathic zombies. Many attendees agreed that the movie managed to breathe new life into the zombie genre by introducing a concept that felt both original and deeply unsettling.

Outside the theater, the premiere night continued with interviews and conversations among content creators and moviegoers. While some attendees quietly exited the mall after the emotionally intense screening, others enthusiastically shared their thoughts on camera. The creators who had previously approached before the screening stayed true to their word and participated in lively interviews, discussing the film.

Some fans even jokingly demonstrated how they would act if infected by the virus from Colony, mimicking zombie movements and improvising “transformation scenes” that brought humor into the post-movie atmosphere. These spontaneous interactions reflected how engaged viewers became with the film’s concept and world.

As the evening came to an end and the mall gradually prepared to close, the excitement from the premiere still lingered. Finding a late-night place to eat outside the mall became the final part of an already memorable night filled with horror, laughter, suspense, and shared reactions.

More than just another zombie movie premiere, Colony successfully created an immersive experience that stayed with audiences long after leaving the theater. Through its intelligent reinvention of the infected, intense SCREENX presentation, and emotionally charged survival narrative, the film proved that the zombie genre still has the ability to evolve—and terrify—in completely new ways.
