Former President Erap Estrada’s son reacts to ABS-CBN franchise renewal

The son of former Manila Mayor Erap Estrada’s son with Laarni Enriquez, Jake Ejercito, suggested to government officials to set aside their personal vendettas and interests in dealing with ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal.

As per Jake, ABS-CBN has been in service for the Filipino for 65 years only to be stopped by the government officials who are allegedly “in the service of the President”.

ABS-CBN’s been “in the service of the Filipino” while a number of our officials are sickeningly only in the service of the president. Detach personal vendettas/interests from your public service, good sirs #NoToABSCBNShutDown

Jake is set to work on the comeback film of his brother Jinggoy Estrada who is back after a seven-year hiatus from the entertainment industry and losing in the senatorial elections.

Aside from Jake, Jinggoy’s Coming Home film also includes Sylvia Sanchez, Smokey Manaloto, Almira Muhlach, and Ariella Arida.

ABS-CBN’s Franchise Renewal Update:

Last Wednesday, the House Committee on Legislative Franchises Vice Chairman Rep. Antonio Albano announced that they don’t have time to prioritize ABS-CBN franchise renewal bills as there are more urgent bills that they need to address.

Albano said: “Hindi ganun kadali mag-schedule ng hearing. Ang daming nangyayari in the past few months that we did not have the time to sit down to see whether we can calendar the ABS-CBN franchise. Alangan naman laktawan naming ang mga nauna para sa ABS-CBN.”

Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility board member Vergel Santos is not thoroughly convinced with Salvador Panelo’s claim that President Rodrigo Duterte is not associated with Solicitor General Jose Calida’s quo warranto petition. This along with other evidence only proves that this is a personal vendetta, President Duterte has been threatening the giant network even before he became the President.

Santos said: “You can very well see the overwhelming evidence of this being a personal case of personal vendetta. We know very well that the President has been warning, threatening to throw away the ABS-CBN franchise. In fact, it’s so ridiculous that the President started issuing this warning even before he became President. It seems to be quite inconceivable for Mr. Duterte even before he could become President to have collected evidence pointing to some kind of flaws in the granting of the franchise of ABS-CBN. This is clearly whatever Mr. Calida, Mr. Panelo say about the President not having to do with this at all, that will not wash.”

Depriving ABS-CBN of its franchise renewal would be a suppression of press freedom.

Santos continued: “This is not only a violation of press freedom, it is the suppression of press freedom. We must understand that press freedom is first in the rank in the hierarchy of freedoms, it is what defines a democracy effectively…”
