It takes an Italian to make us realize the importance of history and heritage.

In the March 28 episode of Kapamilya Romantic Teleserye “Dolce Amore”, Matteo Guidicelli and Liza Soberano’s characters Gian Carlo and Serena twits the Pambansang Photobomber – Torre De Manila.

Giancarlo (Guidicelli’s character), on their visit to Rizal’s monument in Luneta, can’t avoid but point to the “Pambansang photobomber” – the controversial 49-storey Torre De Manila that’s obstructing the backdrop of the Rizal Monument. The Italian bachelor then chided the site as not nice to which Serena (Soberano’s character) agreed with the comment that it’s ruining the view.

“It’s not very nice,” said Giancarlo.
“Yeah. Ruin the view,” Serena replied.

That scene took a deep stab in our country’s efforts in valuing historical places and heritage site.

Prior to their trip to Luneta, the two also went to Paco Park which used to be a municipal cemetery. The two talked about how this country is seemingly ignoring the importance of history and heritage in exchange of progress and finding it’s own identity.

“You know, in this country, they don’t like keeping old things. They tear it down and build a big big mall.” – Serena
“Talaga? Terible iyon!” – Giancarlo
“Well, maybe it’s a country trying to find its identity”. – Serena
“But if you don’t have your history, saan ang reference nila?” – Giancarlo

Over on Twitter, netizens can’t help but commend the fictitious Italian characters for having a sense of value for history and heritage which most Filipino’s don’t have.

One comment said, it is because Italians “preserve and value their historic buildings as prominent reminder of their ancient and extensive history”. Another one even laments Pinoys for “having immense sense of faux pride” but “have no sense of history”.

Meanwhile, aside from being a “Kilig Teleserye”, Dolce Amore is becoming the Philippines’ Tourism ambassador teleserye as it showcases the country’s rich history, culture and heritage.

Apart from Paco Park and Rizal Park, “Dolce Amore” has also showcased the beauty of Bohol, the San Sebastian Church and Tagaytay.
