Shangri-La Plaza, a steadfast supporter of Filipino arts, is holding Sinag, an art exhibit happening at the Grand Atrium until June 18. With the participation of the local galleries at the Shang, the event aims to give the spotlight on Filipino creativity and culture in time for the celebration of the country’s 124th Independence Day.

Art Circle Gallery is curating Tangkilikin Ang Sariling Atin featuring Otep Bañez who’s known for Pinoy pop social realism; Jef Albea, an international fashion designer known for his artistic sculptures; Ramon Cajipe, a hard wood artwork sculptor from Paete, Laguna; and Glenn Cagandahan who’s a sculptor using the convergence of folk imagery and unfamiliar shapes.

Galerie Raphael is taking Kalayaan: Isang Parangal to Sinag, bringing together 25 artists to showcase the various aspects of freedom in the Philippines. The special exhibit is in commemoration of the Philippine Independence Day, solidifying the citizens’ rights to self-determination, liberty, and sovereignty.

The exhibition feature works by National Artist Federico Aguilar Alcuaz who is mainly known for his gestural paintings, sculptures, and textile art, and Medal of Merit Awardee Juvenal Sanso, a multi-faceted artist who used oils, watercolor, acrylic, and ink and dry brush medium in his childhood-inspired creations. The gallery will also display works by other visual artists: Barbara Angeles, Vic Bachoco, Karina Baluyut, Caress Banson, Joy Calanasan, Marco Coching, Gary Custodio, Raul Isidro, Dr. Ronnie Lim, Art Lozano, April Lopez, Almer Moneda, Ann Moneda, Milmar Onal, Mikel Parial, Jax Pasimio, Michael Pastorizo, Richard Perez, Aljo Pingol, Juanito Torres, Ryan Velsaco, Camille Ver, and Ralph Villaluz.

Artologist, home of the young, emerging, and midcareer contemporary artists, is also part of Sinag. It’s presenting Obra with participating artists namely Mark Albea, Manny Cabrera, Joe Marie Sanclaria Chua, Dennis Francisco, Honesto Guiruela III, Caloy Gabuco, Ram Mallari, Eric Madrigal Masangkay, Kenneth Montegrande, Adam Nacianceno, Wilfred Offemaria Jr., Sam Penaso, and Atty. Joy Rojas. Jef Albea will also display his other pieces for this collection.

The arts, in all exciting formats, can represent the soul of a nation and the plight of its people. Giving the local art scene the spotlight it truly deserves supports the amazing creations of Filipino artists, while also helping enlighten people and encouraging them to fully appreciate the importance of patriotism in their daily lives. What a meaningful way to mark the Independence Day, only at Shang.
