Monti Parungao cites inspiration of ‘Tols’ from ‘Palibhasa Lalaki’

On June 6, Director Monti Parungao cited the inspiration of Tols from the ’90s sitcom Palibhasa Lalaki.

During the media conference for Tols, Parungao recalled how they came up with the concept of the upcoming GTV sitcom.

“Well, nagsimula ‘yung konsepto kasi hiningan kami ng Merlion for a sitcom.

“So ‘yun nag-isip ako, ‘ano ba?’

He then attributed his inspiration for Tols to the ’90s sitcom Palibhasa Lalaki.

“Maganda ‘yung pagkakasulat ngayon, it’s a new kind of comedy na masasabi because ang mga comedy natin are all fillial and family lang, ito may family pero may katarantaduhan. ‘Yun kalokohan nila lumalabas.”

Parungao also revealed the casting process behind Tols with the stars Kelvin Miranda, Shaun Salvador, and Abdul Rahman.

“Si Kelvin is given. Ganon kami Miss Peachy eh.

May pupuntahan.

“Si Shaun from the same management.

The Kapuso director then compared the Tols cast to Palibhasa Lalaki actors.

“Di naman nila ginaya no, pero dahil nga tatlo sila, lumabas ‘yung similarities nila. Tatlo rin naman sila sa Palibhasa lalaki. Lumabas lang ‘yung similarities.

“Kelvin is similar to Richard Gomez. Tapos si Joey Marquez ay si Dos (Shaun Salvador), Tapos John Estrada si Third (Abdul Rahman.) Ganon ang lumabas. Pinaka magaling si Shaun sa comedy.”

Tols stars Rufa Mae Quinto, Kelvin Miranda, Shaun Salvador, Abdul Rahman, Betong Sumaya, Arkin Del Rosario, Olivia Bihag, and Raymond Mabute.

The sitcom, co-produced by GMA and Merlion Events Production Inc. and directed by Monti Parungao, premieres on June 25, Saturday at 7 p.m. on GTV.
