Smokey Manaloto highlights the kind of comedy that would not offend people

On November 8, comedian Smokey Manaloto highlighted the kind of comedy that would not offend people.

At the media conference for the reboot of ‘Takeshi’s Castle,’ which LionhearTV covered, Manaloto maintained that comedians can create comedic punchlines without hurting or offending people.

“Sa totoo lang, kapag wala ka namang sinasaktang tao at ‘yung intention mo sa pagpapatawa ay hindi pangungutya, hindi pangmamaliit, hindi pang lalait, I’m pretty sure, makakagawa ka ng punch line na hindi nakakasama, and at the same time, gaya nga ng sabi ko, ‘yung comedy noon, kung gagawin mo ngayon, it’s very offensive minsan, ‘yung namamatok, ‘yung pinagtatawanan ‘yung may kapansanan, pero if you give it a certain twist, kapag binigyan mo ng parang ibang klaseng atake, applicable pa rin ngayon, and at the same time, hindi ka nakaka-offend ng tao.”

He also noted that comedians do need to adjust to the era or period they’re currently in.

“Hindi mahirap, I mean, kailangan din naman mag-adjust ng mga komedyante sa panahon, go with the times, pero at the same time, let’s stop ‘yung side ng comedy na kailangan nang aalipusta ka ng tao or nananakit ka ng tao, let’s start having comedy, imbis na mapanira ka ng tao, mapapasaya mo siya na ina-uplift mo ‘yung feelings ng tao, ‘yun feelings ng tao.”

Manaloto echoed the King of Comedy Dolphy’s advice about comedy being timeless.

“Para sa akin, hindi mahirap magpatawa ngayon. Kasi gaya noong napag-aralan ko din kay Tatay (Dolphy), tapos sa ibang mga comedian na nakakatrabaho ko din, comedy is timeless. ‘Yung punchline nagagamit ko noon, lagyan mo lang ng kaunting bagong twist, applicable pa rin ngayon, and it still has the same effect, tatawa at tatawa pa rin ang tao.”

He also echoed his co-host, Eugene Domingo’s comment about Filipinos’ proclivity to having fun and comedy.

‘Takeshi’s Castle’ reboot features new hosts such as Eugene Domingo, Smokey Manoloto, and Sassa Gurl.

The Japanese game show has eight episodes with guest commentators such as Maris Racal, Zanjoe Marudo, and Ketchup Eusebio.

‘Takeshi’s Casle’ streams on Prime Video starting November 16.

Manaloto hosted ‘Takeshi’s Castle’ in 1989 with Anjo Yllana, performing the roles of Emporer Takeshi and Iwakura.

The Japanese game show returned to air after 34 years with a global premiere in Ebisu Garden Place in Tokyo, Japan, in April this year.
