Matias expressed deep appreciation for this honor, underscoring the significance of being recognized by esteemed librarians. Describing the award as “special,” he said, “Nagkaroon ako ng gana sa sarili ko. Severino Reyes Medal is organized by IBBY PH. International organization ang IBBY. Malaking karangalan. Marami ang lumahok kaya masaya ako at napili ang Moymoy Lulumboy: Ang Batang Aswang. Pangalawa, ang judges ay batikang librarians. Dalubhasa sila sa wastong panlasa at de kalidad na aklat. Magsusulat akong muli.”
Book Inspiration
When asked about the inspiration behind his work, Matias talked about reimagining Filipino mythical creatures in a more humanized light. “Gusto kong ipakita na kahit anong creature rito sa mundo, three-dimensional character din siya,” he said.
By exploring the multifaceted nature of these mythical beings, Matias offers readers a fresh and engaging perspective. “The aswang (shape-shifting creature in Philippine folklore) deserves this kind of treatment also,” he emphasized.
Likewise, Moymoy Lulumboy draws deeply from Matias’s childhood experiences. Growing up in the province, he was observant and inquisitive about his environment. Like the protagonist of the story, Matias was adventurous and curious as a child. “Kung mababasa mo kay Moymoy, half of it, medyo ako… I’m very, very curious with everything,” he added.
International Interest
The appeal of Moymoy Lulumboy extends beyond the Philippines. In fact, renowned English writer Neil Gaiman expressed interest in the book and requested for a copy. Matias was delighted to provide him with a signed edition.
