From Shutdown to Showdown: ABS-CBN’s Daring Comeback in Philippine Media

Rising from the challenges of its 2020 shutdown, ABS-CBN has rebuilt its brand through blockbuster films, top-rating teleseryes, and high-profile collaborations.

In July 2020, ABS-CBN—once hailed as the Philippines’ largest and most influential media conglomerate—was abruptly silenced after the Duterte administration denied its application for broadcast franchise renewal. The shutdown, widely viewed as politically motivated, plunged the industry into uncertainty, left thousands unemployed, and created a cultural vacuum in Filipino households long accustomed to the Kapamilya network’s daily presence.

Yet, true to the resilience that has long defined its legacy, ABS-CBN has not only weathered this storm—it is staging a remarkable resurgence. With profitability now within reach in the next 18 months, the network is mounting a bold return, powered by hit films, top-rating shows, and pioneering partnerships that signal a multimedia renaissance.

The Digital Pivot: Rebuilding Through Innovation

In the wake of the shutdown, ABS-CBN turned adversity into opportunity. No longer tethered to traditional airwaves, it harnessed the power of digital platforms to reach its audiences. From Kapamilya Online Live and iWantTFC to its powerhouse presence on YouTube, the network leveraged its storytelling prowess to build a new media empire in cyberspace.

By 2021, signs of a turnaround were undeniable. Shows like FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano and It’s Showtime dominated streaming metrics, with the latter eclipsing Eat Bulaga! to claim the top spot in noontime TV. In 2024, ABS-CBN made digital history when FPJ’s Batang Quiapo and Pamilya Sagrado drew a combined 1.45 million online viewers in a single night—proof that the Kapamilya brand had evolved, not faded.

Star Cinema Strikes Back: A Box Office Renaissance

Central to this revival is Star Cinema, whose resurgence has reignited the local film industry. The 2023 MMFF entry Rewind, co-produced with APT Entertainment and Agosto Dos Media, grossed nearly ₱900 million worldwide, setting a new record for Filipino cinema. One year later, Hello, Love, Again—a cross-network team-up with GMA Pictures starring Kathryn Bernardo and Alden Richards—shattered expectations and reaffirmed ABS-CBN’s growing global ambitions.

Other blockbusters such as Un/Happy For You (Joshua Garcia, Julia Barretto) and And the Breadwinner Is… (Vice Ganda’s 2024 MMFF comedy triumph) cemented Star Cinema’s status as the country’s preeminent film studio, with theatrical success delivering greater revenue returns than conventional licensing deals.

Television Triumphs: A Dominant 2025 Slate

On the small screen, ABS-CBN’s 2025 programming is nothing short of formidable. FPJ’s Batang Quiapo continues to reign as the nation’s most-watched teleserye. Action-packed newcomer Incognito, starring Richard Gutierrez and Daniel Padilla, premiered in January to critical and popular acclaim. Sins of the Father, featuring Gerald Anderson and Jessy Mendiola, along with the much-anticipated Philippine adaptation of It’s Okay to Not Be Okay headlined by Anne Curtis, Carlo Aquino, and Joshua Garcia, showcase the network’s narrative depth and casting strength.

Meanwhile, the return of Pilipinas Got Talent in its seventh season has already gone viral, spotlighting  55-year-old  trompo spinner, Cardong Trumpo, who won a gold buzzer and eventually took home the grand prize.

A Historic Collaboration: PBB x GMA

Perhaps the most buzzworthy development is the 2025 Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) Celebrity Collab Edition—a game-changing partnership between ABS-CBN and longtime rival GMA Network. Celebrating PBB’s 20th anniversary, this season brings together talents from Star Magic and Sparkle, airing for the first time on GMA. Following joint ventures like Unbreak My Heart and the It’s Showtime simulcast, this unprecedented alliance has stoked massive anticipation and marked a turning point in Philippine TV cooperation.

Financial Reset, Strategic Rise

At its 2025 virtual stockholders’ meeting, President and CEO Carlo Katigbak announced encouraging progress: cost control, debt reduction, and a clear path to profitability. Social media channels buzzed with optimism as news outlets and fans alike, amplified projections of a financial rebound within 18 months—fueled by strong content pipelines and operational efficiency.

While traditional free-to-air broadcasting remains off the table, ABS-CBN has doubled down on digital monetization and global expansion—particularly across North America, the Middle East, Australia, and now Europe—broadening its reach and revenue base.

Digital Dominance: The “YouTubeverse” Era

With 53 million YouTube subscribers, ABS-CBN Entertainment is a digital juggernaut. Through Kapamilya Online Live, exclusive streams, and the “YouTubeverse” initiative, the network delivers fresh, fan-focused content. Short-form series like Patrol ng Pilipino thrive on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook, ensuring the brand resonates with both Gen Z and diaspora audiences across platforms

Great Strides in the Music and Concert Scenes

ABS-CBN’s Star Music has soared to new heights in the recording and performing arts scene, driven by the meteoric rise of new artists like BINI and Maki. BINI, the trailblazing PPOP group, made history as the first to stage a sold-out concert at the 55,000-seater Philippine Arena, a testament to their massive fanbase and cultural impact. Maki’s fresh sound has also captivated audiences, further solidifying ABS-CBN’s reputation for nurturing top-tier talent. With innovative music and dynamic performances, these artists have propelled Star Music to unprecedented success, redefining Filipino pop and cementing ABS-CBN’s dominance in the entertainment industry.

Public Service and Staying Power

Even amid economic headwinds—including a 2024 layoff impacting 100 employees due to declining ad revenue—ABS-CBN has reaffirmed its public service mission. Through collaborations with organizations like the Philippine Association of Communication Educators and its all-hands-on-deck coverage of the 2025 midterm elections, the network continues to position itself as a vital civic force.

ABS-CBN’s story is not just one of survival—it’s a masterclass in reinvention. Emerging from the embers of its shutdown, the network has redefined what it means to be a media powerhouse in the digital age.

With its creative engines roaring and partnerships expanding, ABS-CBN is writing its most compelling chapter yet—proof that the Kapamilya spirit, undeterred and unbowed, continues to shape the soul of Filipino storytelling.
