Cinema One Blockbuster Sundays premieres the Tagalized version of the Korean drama film “My Mother, The Mermaid” on May 19.

The story is about Na-young (Jeon Do-yeon), an office worker who lives with her seemingly emotionless father Jin-kook (Kim Bong-geun) and her loud cynical mother Yeon-soon (Ko Du-shim). Frustrated and tired, Na-young looks forward to vacationing abroad— until her father goes missing and she has to skip the trip to find him.

Na-young heads off to her father’s hometown where she meets an unexpected character and is mysteriously transported into the past. Here she stumbles upon the younger versions of her parents (Jeon Do-yeon in a dual role as Yeon-soon and Park Hae-il as Jin-kook) who were much different then. As Na-young witnesses the trials, heartbreaks and celebrations of her parents, she begins to realize the kind of understanding that must exist within a family.

Reviewers have dubbed “My Mother, The Mermaid” as a relatable tear-jerker and a beautiful romance. Jeon Do-yeon’s dual role as Na-young and the young Yeon-soon further established her reputation as one of Korea’s most versatile actresses and finest “chameleons.” The onscreen chemistry between Jeon Do-yeon and Park Hae-il was labeled as one of the most charming relationships ever in Korean cinema.
Far East Films (www.fareastfilms.com), one of most comprehensive and popular fansites dedicated to Asian cinema, described “My Mother, The Mermaid” as “a strange blend of the fantastical and the heartfelt that has a power to affect long after the (end) credits roll.” The film is not the usual romantic drama because of its theme of time travel.
Catch the touching “My Mother, The Mermaid” this Sunday, May 19 at 8:00 p.m., only on the Philippines’ number one cable channel, Cinema One (SkyCable Channel 56). Follow Cinema One channel @cinema_one on Twitter and ‘like’ it on Facebook at www.facebook.com/Cinema1channel.
