Rausu’s Riches: ANC Documentary on Japan’s Fishing Industry

An ABS-CBN News documentary looks into Japan’s long-standing affair with fish and seafood by featuring its fishing industry and the life a Filipina who lives in a small fishing town called Rausu in Hokkaido.

ANC DOCU EXPLORES JAPAN’S FISHING INDUSTRY AND A FILIPINA'S LIFE IN FISHING TOWN IN RAUSU 2

Rosy Iizuka, whose husband works as a ryoshi or fisherman, is one of only two Filipinos who reside in the fishing village. Since her husband earns a comfortable living, they are able to send their two children to good schools. Japan’s ryoshis are well compensated, working as salaried fishermen and earning ¥300,000 a month.

Rosy has been living in Rausu for 25 years and has become accustomed to the quiet life it offers. She gets to fulfill her passion for teaching English to the fishermen’s children, a way of giving back to the community for accepting her as one of them.

While she is still a Filipina at heart, she has taken a liking to the Japanese culture, especially its equally simple and complex cuisine. She is delighted to find out that Hokkaido is planning to export its seafood products to the Philippines. Watch the documentary “Rausu’s Riches,” Friday night (March 27), 8 p.m. on ANC.
