In a chart posted in PEP, Eat Bulaga’s rating began to significantly decline on the month of October, 2015. Though the show received a major spike on the day of ‘Tamang Panahon’, the ratings continued to decline after the event.
But how? How can a dominating show suddenly lose its appeal to the masses? Unfortunately, the show made drastic changes to the segment we loved.
Wanting to break the chains bounded by the tag ‘AlDub’, “EatBulaga” decided to kill off Yaya Dub’s character and introduce a “new” character in Maine Mendoza.
Though the change made a buzz out of the audience about how their chemistry is slowly shifting towards their personal lives, it’s not long until the people got tired of the “new” pair.
Replacing ‘AlDub’ with ‘MaiDen’, though a very promising strategy, just didn’t work out for the Kapuso Network.
Yaya Dub’s character has become a part of the hearts of the Filipinos. It’s not everyday that you see a small star grow up in front of live television. Here lies the cause of their current misfortune. The people fell madly in love with ‘Yaya Dub’ that introducing a “new character” was totally out of their taste.
The trademark of Yaya Dub, where all her dialogues were expressed in dubsmashes, slowly faded and was replaced with her authentic voice. And her character, from an underdog yaya, slowly became a soon-to-be star.
This broke the connection the masses have with Maine Mendoza. They love her mysteriousness, her ‘dubsmashes’, and the struggles she experience just to meet Alden. They love Yaya Dub.
Now we see her as Maine Mendoza, a normal star in “Eat Bulaga”. Though we still experience some “kilig” moments when we see her and Alden on air, it’s not the same as the chemistry they had before.
Today, “Eat Bulaga” is finding new ways to reinvent itself once again. Introducing segments like ‘Traffic Diva’ and ‘Grabe S’ya’, the show seeks to uncover hidden talents in the sea of Filipinos.
Perhaps “Eat Bulaga” might encounter a new twist to make another chart-topping comeback, but as of now, we get to enjoy the classic “EatBulaga” we’ve known and loved.
