TFC nabs two awards at the 47th Annual Northern California EMMY® Awards held recently at the SF Jazz Center.

The team behind the original Balitang America documentary – Box City – holds up their Emmys® after winning in the Public/Current/Community Affairs – Program/Special – English category. (L-R) Jeremiah Ysip (director of photography), Jon Santos (editor), Henni Espinosa (producer/writer/host), Patrick Luna (photographer). TFC bested KTVU Fox 2, KRCB in Sonoma County, and Hawaii News Now (KGMB) when “Box City,” an original Balitang America documentary, won in the Public/ Current/ Community Affairs – Program/Special – English category. The documentary tells the story of homeless Filipinos, who built their small homes made of cardboard and plywood, living in an encampment they call Box City.

Henni Espinosa brings home two Emmys® that night for On-Camera Talent-Program Host (English) and as part of the team behind Box City, winner for Public/ Current/ Community Affairs – Program/Special – English category.

Box City was produced by the same team behind the EMMY® award-winning documentary “The Filipino Champions of SOMA,” that won the regional EMMY® for the same category five years ago: Overall In-Charge of Production Olivia De Jesus and John Lazatin; Producer, Writer and Host Henni Espinosa; Director of Photography Jeremiah Ysip; Editor Jon Santos; and Graphics Artist Mike Carrion. Patrick Luna was asked on board to provide drone shots and additional video.

BA’s Assignment Editor and Senior Correspondent Henni Espinosa won as On-Camera Talent – Program Host in the English category for her work in Box City.

At the red-carpet interview with NBC Bay Area’s Kevin Wing, Espinosa shared that, “When we first went into the encampment filled with homeless Filipinos, we didn’t know what to expect. My cameraman, Jeremiah, told me ‘you need to get in there. These are people with stories who don’t want to be judged; they just want to share why they’re in that situation.’”

Espinosa added “What’s even more meaningful beyond the awards and accolades is that people actually reached out to help these homeless Filipinos after Box City aired. They gave food, donations, and clothing. For us, that’s what’s more important. It has become a movement.”
