Union Bank of the Philippines (UnionBank) was recognized recently at the 54th Anvil Awards, where it earned a Silver Anvil for a program that aims to help rural and thrift banks in far-flung areas of the country provide better financial services to their customers.
The awarding ceremony, which was held by the Public Relations Society of the Philippines to honor outstanding public relations programs, tools, and practitioners in the country, took place last January 30, 2019 at the Marriott Hotel in Manila City.
UnionBank won a Silver Anvil award in the Public Relations Programs category for Project i2i, a program that is being implemented in partnership with US-based blockchain firm ConsenSys. The program is part of the bank’s TechUp Pilipinas movement which utilizes technology to push for inclusive and sustainable prosperity.
Project i2i (Island-to-Island, Institution-to-Institution, Individual-to-Individual) is a program that seeks to enable financial institutions all over the country, particularly non-commercial banks, to expand and deliver their services at a fraction of the cost by linking them to universal banking using blockchain, a first among banks in the Philippines. This is helpful to the rural and thrift banks as these institutions typically do not have enough resources to access universal banking and deliver the range of services offered by their commercial counterparts.
