Why You Should See It:
You can tell the tense scoring–the use of dimmer yellow filter are just Selina’s Gold’s devices to conjure an ominous atmosphere, and reflect the hostile time the film set in. The Philippines was on the brink of falling under the Japanese colonial rule; poverty was creeping into the countryside, rendering the people helpless and desperate for help. To survive, they enlist the help of the barrio’s wealthiest man, Tiago (Jay Manalo), but not without a hefty price.
17-year-old Selina (Angeli Khang) is sold by her father, Berong (Soliman Cruz) to Tiago, when he could no longer gather as payment for a long-unsettled debt. The sight of the traumatized young woman, who came before her, was enough to make Selina cower in fear, but her greedy father, who could not care less about the peril of leaving his daughter to Tiago behind, was resolute.
The film made sure the audience understand how vile of a character was. He took pleasure deliriously, and at the expense of other’s people agony. He takes advantage of the poor’s tragedy. He does not pause when it comes to satisfying his lust. He fully understood that being the wealthiest man in the land made him essentially powerful. But Selina, who finally learned to be at the helm of her situation, knew very well that every man has weakness, and she was all geared up to turn it to her advantage.
Selina’s Gold is a two-hour film, and much of it got spent in showing Selina’s tragedy and Tiago’s loathsomeness, it offered incredibly thought-provoking social commentary that is worthy of an applause. Women’s rights, gender equality, injustice, among others, are only tackled with subtlety, and yet, given the hostility of the situation Selina was in, they were able to hit the audience with such compelling power.
