Filipino rapper and ‘FPJ’s Batang Quiapo’ actor Smugglaz declared that the current era is the golden age of Original Pilipino Music (OPM) during an event at Holic Bar in Quezon City.
He highlighted the vast opportunities provided by digital platforms, which have revolutionized the local music scene.
“Parang ito na nga, sabi rin ni idol Chito Miranda, parang sinabi niya na ito ang golden age ng OPM, nanggaling pa mismo sa kanya ‘yan. Kumbaga sila ‘yung golden age,” Smugglaz stated, pointing to the success of P-pop group BINI as a testament to the current era’s potential.
“Para sakin, oo, kasi nandito na ‘yung mas malawak na platform, ‘yung internet.”
While the ’90s is often regarded as the golden age of OPM, with bands like Eraserheads, Rivermaya, and Parokya ni Edgar dominating the scene, Parokya ni Edgar frontman Chito Miranda believes today is even better.
In an Instagram post from August 2023, Miranda recalled how artists were once treated like “second-class citizens” despite their success. He noted that this has changed, with both new and established acts receiving the recognition and compensation they deserve.
Miranda praised the internet and digital platforms for allowing artists to thrive independently of mainstream media and recording companies, providing greater creative freedom and control over their careers.
Smugglaz, known for his impactful lyrics and dynamic performances, recently released a new song titled ‘Piging.’ The track is a heartfelt tribute to his younger brother, who was tragically gunned down by an unknown assailant.
